Hey I didn't say he was shot. But surely the thinking was there was no point seeing letting him take more punishment again, not that this was a far worse beating than he'd gotten before. If you could reverse the order of the fights, and the one handed version of Paulie who'd been in two battles was facing that version of Cotto, how do you think if would have gone? Or if Khan had faced the fresher version of Paulie who saw out the 12 rounds with a broken cheek bone against Cotto. It was a good win, but don't claim he did what Cotto couldn't do, Cotto beat the hell out of him in that fight and he looked a mess. The difference was in the ref and in Paulie.
Mallignaggi was in no danger of being TKO/KO'd, the fight was stopped because he clearly wasn't going to win and was just going to unnecessarily get hurt for 2 rounds at a stage in a fight where you can be hurt the most As for people speculating that you can't beat Maidana with 'jab and run'.. they need to stop armchair training/tacticianing as and it's embarrassing to read. Any trainer will tell you that with the right footwork, hand speed and athletic conditioning you can avoid anyone all night with the a fast jab, many fighters make their career on it. Months ago, people I spoke with who's opinions are respected told me they believe Roach will employ the same strategy as they did with Kotelnik. I believe this time Khan will be much more capable of doing it and that it's going to be a 12 round UD to Khan, 100% tight the whole way, they are not going to risk Maidana throwing one punch in a momentary lapse of concentration in the later rounds. This is about Khan proving he can go in with a puncher, deal with it and win. However wheras that's what I believe WILL happen... for me personally. I think the best thing for Khan to do is go in on the offensive, guns blazing and fight Maidana the whole 12 rounds. He'd get much more credit and silence a lot of doubters if he pulled it off. Wheras if he goes the safe route, the detractors will say the same things they did after the Kotelnik match
Oh definitely, there's no denying that the Malignaggi of the Cotto fight was fresher, and that Malignaggi would have had the legs to survive the 12 rounds without being stopped. But I was merely illustrating the point that Khan does have respectable power, as showcased in this bout. And yes he did do what Cotto couldn't do, but in other ways (disregarding the TKO issue). He dominated him in a far more impressive fashion, using a far more effective strategy. But again, this can bring us back to your above point. Although a fresher Malignaggi wouldn't have made that much of a difference, Khan would have still smacked him about for the full 12.
My respect went up massively after Khan agreed to Maidana. He still has a lot to prove before he can be called even Prince. If he does 'smoke' Maidana, then well yes SOME of the hype can be justified, but i think it will be a HARD fight for Khan, with him eventually winning UD. Looking forward to the 11th Dec. Gonna be a huge night here in the UK especially with big Del Boy and Frank Warrens Card. Wonder if sky will put it all on the same PPV?
There bits and pieces coming out today but the full details will hopefully be known by end of play tomorrow
I would say Khan does have decent power alright. He's probably not as heavy handed as Ortiz or maybe Alexander, but he's got plenty to make fighters respect him.
to be fair Prescott is still ranked by the WBA in khans weight division. Just because Amir is scared/unwilling to fight Prescott again, does not mean that it won't ever be forced. Prescott could potentially work his way up through the rankings relatively quickly...second time round it could be over twice as quick! Gotta give Khan credit for recent form. He's fought extremely confident - damn near triumphant. Especially considering what he's been through, and what he's still deals with in the ways of weakness.
Khan's got a great right hand. I think he'll do well in the counter game with Maidana, it's just that ****ing chin...
