Not only do I not consider him a weak division in the greater scheme of the sport, I think his candidacy for 2014 Fighter of the Year might be the strongest, with only Crawford in the conversation with him. I think he is clearly ahead of Kovalev and Gonzalez (let alone Pacquiao or Mayweather) and probably still ahead of Inoue even if he should dominate and/or kayo Narvaez in four weeks.

Ruenroeng is getting robbed here unless he gets a knock out.

I'm excited for this, actually. Good for Ruenroeng getting a high paying high profile bout and good for Shiming stepping up for a world title early.

My prediction will be for Shiming to win a Split Decision that Ruenroeng deserved to win in a close fight.

Won't affect his unofficial 2014 F'erOTY status, being in March. :good

That, nobody can take from him. (except, I guess, by saying "nay" to it, being a subjective and unofficial thing and everything :!:)

He was the only fighter who beat more than 2 "ranked" or "meaningful" opponents in the calendar year. His being forgotten in discussions has more to do with his ethnicity and division than his merit. Many people simply don't know him, didn't watch him, or don't know anything about Featherweight 'n below in general to appreciate the on-paper resume either.

Toprank with some risky match making. Isn't it too early for him to fight the one of the top 5 flyweights in the World?

Shiming will probably never be ready for Ruenroeng, but of the belt holders at Flyweight he has the most chance of making it to the final bell (Gonzalez & Estrada hospitalize him by then), thus you can expect scorecards that don't reflect anything that actually happened.

Sad but true. I've been a Kovalev fan much longer than I've even known who Ruenroeng is and vastly prefer to watch Kov - but I can't put together a serious argument or keep a straight face suggesting that Agnew, Caparello, and geriatric Hopkins trump Fuentes, Ioka, and Arroyo.

Even the other lower-weights candidate and the darling of the diehards (and someone I've been following, like Kovalev, for longer than most other fans have even been aware of his existence) in Chocolatito - his year just doesn't quite measure up to Ruenroeng's.

Both have victories over Fuentes, canceled out. (if you want you can even say a slight edge to Gonzalez for stopping him, though 1. Ruenroeng fought him first and 2. Ruenroeng isn't a KO artist, so that standard is a bit unfair as that's more a question of styles than form)

Both have massive victories over Japanese former straw champs, evenly matched rivals Ioka & Yaegashi. These also pretty much cancel one another out. (you can argue that Ioka was unbeaten and on that remarkable 8-0 wunderkind run in world title bouts, and got embarrassed and made to look somewhat ordinary; you can argue on the other hand that Gonzalez dished out ungodly punishment on an extremely tough Yaegashi and got the stoppage of Akira, who unlike Kazuto did manage to capture a belt at 112lbs in his first try and defend it a few times...and whom I actually had narrowly beating Ioka down at 105lbs, FWIW)

That leaves McWilliams Arroyo, easily a bigger victory than Kantun & Purisma combined.

Ruenrueng has proven his skills against Ioka and Arroyo. It would be a huge surprise, if the fight is even close. Shiming looked bad against weaker opponents.

I see Ruenroeng getting beaten decisively here.

Shiming is very underrated and he can somewhat crack (Showcased in his last fight) even though he's only had 1 stoppage in his 6 fights.

Shiming's style of moving in and out, punching from awkward angles, being able to move and potshot on the fly will be the key to this win.

Nobody is giving Shiming a great chance, but I can see it happening.

Literally my exact same thought process.

While Hopkins is the best single win of the six between Ruenroeng and Kovalev, it doesn't compensate for the rest of the equation... Hopkins (gap), Ioka (big gap), Fuentes, Arroyo (gap), Agnew (gap), Caparello.

While I think Ioka is better than Yaegashi (better at 105, has the 108 run, and I scored their war an even draw) you have to add in that Yaegashi was established #1 at Fly whereas Ioka had never fought there when Ruenroeng beat him. I also thought Ruenroeng/Ioka could have gone either way so slight edge to Roman over Yaegashi for sure. Still, relatively as even as the comparisons come. Same with the Fuentes wins being level who I give the slightest nod to Ruenroeng simply for doing it first (as you say about stoppage/no stoppage, doesn't add to it enough in this specific case to surpass doing it first). Arroyo, who had just squeezed into the top 10 at flyweight, is the kicker. Advantage Ruenroeng.

The Thai fighter is my fighter of the year, this fight is not easy but is winnable, good for them, they could get few bucks from this match.
