I think Canelo beating Kovalev was almost as good as Trevor Berbick's legendary destruction of Ali. Two wins for the ages.

I said it was better than Olson beating Maxim and Jones beating Hill. How am I wrong?

Kovalev fought Canelo 2 months after having a brutal fight with Yarde.

Kovalev barely had enough recovery time and had a very short camp. The fight also had a rehydration clause.

He got good money, but sold his soul for this fight. He was weakened badly, that's why his punches didn't have a lot of sting on them despite being a power puncher.

Oh Bull. Don't be so overly dramatic. Kovalev routinely came in well under the the 175 pound limit. As low as 173, sometimes.

And he fought Canelo three months after he fought Yarde. How long did Maxim have to prepare after the Eddie Machen fight before he fought Olson? A handful of weeks? Who brings that up?

And "rehydration" limits excuses are bull, too.

Kovalev got to weigh in 10 pounds OVER the 175 limit (185) more than 12 hours before the fight to defend his 175 title.

And that fight didn't start until well past midnight in most of the US. How much did Kovalev weigh when he entered the ring 12 hours or more after he weighed in at 185 the morning of the fight?

    It's bull.

Kovalev was having a great year. And Canelo scored a great win.

Enough already with these nonsense excuses.

Kovalev ONLY got to weigh 185 ... and then could eat for the next 12 hours ... but somehow that isn't fair?

It's the 175-pound belt. Michael Spinks once weighed in the morning of his 175 title defense against David Sears weighing 170. 170 the day of the fight.

God Forbid Kovalev weigh 190+ for a light heavyweight title defense.

That's why I don't believe kov threw the fight. He was "trying", but he was at like 20%

August 24 to November 2 is not 3 months. It's just a little over 2 months. Recovery time after the fight can take weeks. He barely had a healthy body before he had to train and start cutting weight again.

And a rehydration clause can cause a fighter to not eat properly the day before and after the weigh in, resulting in weaker punches.

It's a pathetic win. He used every trick in the book to weaken Kovalev.

It was a good win. Kovalev was on the downslope, sure, but he's wasn't a husk of himself. He was still able to give a good effort and outbox Canelo in the majority of rounds. Canelo offered to fight Kovalev right after he beat Eleider, but Yarde was mandated and Kovalev had to take care of that (which he did despite being hurt at one point). Canelo set the catchweight at 185lbs, a weight Kovalev hadn't even weighed in at for the day of weigh-in in his whole career so the he was drained argument is utter nonsense. The timeline just worked out that Canelo and Kovalev had to meet 3 months after the Yarde fight because that is what Kovalev was mandated to do and Canelo needed to fight before the end of the year. And no, the fight wasn't fixed, I used to believe that so I know where some are coming from but it's just not possible these days to fix championship fights. McGirt told us why he didn't want Kovalev fighting tall, because it left his body vulnerable and Kov has never liked body punches, especially not after all the damage his drinking has done to his liver. Kovalev didn't have the stamina anymore to be the Krusher and was trying to return to his roots as an amateur boxer to suit his gas-tank, it's the whole reason he got together with McGirt. When he did sit down on his punches, Canelo usually had something for him, so he chose to tap and probe to keep distance and to frustrate Canelo. Not a fix, Kovalev wasn't shot to bits, and Canelo was just the better, more focused man on the night. It's a good win against a legitimate 175 champ and former P4P entrant.

Good post. I can see it as a good win, but not a great one. Kovalev was far from the Kovalev of old. I agree he wasn’t shot to bits (he wouldn’t have outboxed Canelo for the majority of the fight if he was) but he was definitely well on the downside of his caeer.

Kovalev weighed in 12 hours before the fight at 185. He had another 12 hours to rehydrate as much as he wanted. The fight started after midnight. People complained bitterly how long it took for those two to get in the ring ... because they were waiting for the MMA main event to end on another PPV.

If you are honestly trying to say a 175-pound champ was at a disadvantage because he ONLY got to weigh 190 or so for the fight, you're arguing with the wrong guy.

I find that the dumbest argument one can make, considering I watched future heavyweight champions like Michael Spinks weigh in the morning of light heavyweight title fights weighing FIVE POUNDS UNDER 175.

But I know people have been trotting out that lame argument around here for years.

It's insane. It was a great win by Canelo. Better than any win Andre Ward had over him.

    20 percent. :hang

The red flag on this board when you want to denigrate a winner's performance. Throw a low percentage on the opponent.

point I am making is that the war with yarde 2 months prior took a ton out of kovalev. He was very close to being TKO in that fight
