I don't think too many ATG's have china chins :yep A Lewis chin is about as bad as it gets. Certainly not china, decent infact.
Marvin Hagler had a great chin. So did Kid Gavilan, Roberto Duran, Sandy Saddler, and Julio Cesar Chavez, just to name a few. Ezzard Charles's chin wasn't too great. Neither was Joe Louis's, although they weren't "china-chinned". Tommy Hearns's chin wasn't exactly top of the line.
Yeah, the reason i'm asking is because i'm wondering how many of the ATGs were able to get by with a weak chin. My guess is that you have to be able to take a good punch to get to that level. Some guys just can't take a punch. It's nothing against them. It's not like they have the ability to improve their chin. You are either born with a great/weak chin right?
I would never say Hearns is certified china though. It's not as if he get starched by inconsiderable punchers and fighters. Barkley, Leonard and Hagler! Plus Grant, but he was miles past his peak and up cruiserweight By ATG standards its a bit shakey though.
This is why i think Chad Dawson will never reach that elite level. His chin is way too weak. When he goes into the ring with a guy who can actually connect and has power, like Tarver, i think it's good bye for him. It's too bad though because he has other attributes that many don't have.
Dawson's is somewhere between okay and shakey. I don't think its that bad that it can't be compensated for with good defence. Problem is, he didn't show too much defence last time out under constant pressure
Ali had a good chin. Maybe too good. Ray Leonard could take a punch as could Larry Holmes, Marvin Hagler. George Foreman also. Tunney must have had a decent chin. Lennox Lewis had a good enough chin most days. He got careless against Rahman. Tommy Hearns had a so-so chin at top level, just shaky enough to make things exciting in some of those matches he had.
Horse****, his chin was not that bad at all, just a bit shaky on the elite level when compared to other ATG's.
