Amos 'Big Train' Lincoln "Ready For Clay or Terrell"

30 year-old -Amos 'Big Train' Lincoln says he's ready for either Champion.

Lincoln, now the #3 Heavyweight, following his 2nd victory over
San Francisco Heavyweight #15 ranked Elmer Rush, hopes he can
get one of the Champion's to 'Go West'.

Amos, at 6' 2" and 207 lbs. carries a potent right hand, and a 'granite chin',
to go with his 38-7-1 (23 KO's) record.

Hayward Jones, the manager of the "Big Train" said, 'We can take on
George Chuvalo or 'Big Cat' Williams next. I would like Amos to take one more
fight before we go after the Championship.

Jones added, 'We have beaten Thad Spencer 'twice', and now we have defeated
this 'tough kid' - Elmer Rush 'twice'.

Amos Lincoln, 'I would like to fight for the Championship. I respect Muhammad Ali
and his views, and I would never criticize a man for speaking out for what he thinks
is wrong. But, he and I shoud fight, as it would be the 'best fight' that the world has
ever seen.'

Amos Lincoln to fight George Chuvalo, and then to challenge Cassius Clay.

Hayward Jones, manager of the 'Big Train' said his fighter would tangle with
George Chuvalo in a 10-Round bout, most likely in New York, and on National
Television. We could do it in late-October, and then fight the Champion here
in Oakland in January 1967.

I've tried to get Terrell's manager, Julie Isaacson to give us an opportunity,
but he won't return my calls. They don't want to come near my fighter, as
they know 'Big Train' is big trouble for them.

Thad was a good fighter from 1964 thru early 1968.

And, Amos, who wouldn't have wanted to see that 'crazy *******' fight.

"Pesky Persol Derails The Big Train"

26 year-old Brooklyn Light-Heavyweight - Johnny Persol 'upset' #3 Heavyweight -
Amos 'Big Train' Lincoln by a near complete one-sided 10-Round Decision.

The 6' 0" 182 lb. Persol, a Light-Heavyweight made his debut in the Heavyweight
Division, and could have not performed better, by out-speeding the 'slow moving'
6' 3" 204 lb. Amos Lincoln.

Out-weighed by 22 lbs. and giving away nearly 4" in height, Johnny frustrated the
'Big Train' by darting in and out, and punching under Lincolns longer reach. Persol
controlled the fight from the opening bell, and gave the 'West Coast Heavyweight'
an expert lesson on boxing.

Johnny rocked Lincoln in Rounds 6 and 8 with lunging right hand leads, followed by quick
left hooks to the chin. Amos Lincoln was just too slow to catch his 'ever-moving' rival,
and was completey frutrtated by Persol's speed.

Lincoln was only able to land his power punches in Round 7, when he caught Persol
late in the round with '4' hard right hands, which shook the Brooklynite briefly. But
Persol was too 'speedy' and moved away from the bigger man.

Amos Lincoln, the #3 Heavyweight drops to 38-8-1, and will most likely not get a
chance at the WBA Heavyweight Champion - Ernie Terrell.

Johnny Persol, 'I'm ready for any of the Heavyweights. I can't make 175 lbs. anymore
and I feel comfortable at 182 lbs.'

Amos Lincoln, 'I tried too hard to knock him out, instead of boxing him. I prepared to
fight a big guy, not a small speedy guy.'

Ernie Terrell, 'Well, that ends that. The 'Big Train' ran off the tracks in the rail yard.'

'The Big Train Is Back'

Amos 'Big Train' Lincoln has bounced back from his 'Bad Visit to New York', as he likes to say.

Lincoln won a 10-Round 'Split-Decision' over Archie Ray in Edmonton, Canada.

Though the 'Decision' was announced as 'Split' the 30 year-old 202 lb. Heavyweight clearly
won the bout over 206 lb Archie Ray. The 6' 3" 'Big Train' scored with hard left hands early,
as he backed up the 6' 1" Arizona Heavyweight

Archie made a go of it in the middle rounds, while Amos 'sleep-walked', Archie was able to
land seveal good right hands to the head of the veteran. But Amos took control in Round 8,
when he landed several right hands that staggered Archie.

Both Heavyweights went toe-to-toe in the 'final round' to the delight of the Canadian fans.

'Joe Louis as Celebruty Referee'

The 'Big Train' Amos Lincoln scored a (TKO 3) stoppage over 'slick boxing'
southpaw 'Jimmy James' Rossette, in a Heavyweight Bout with Joe Louis
as the Referee.

Referee, Heavyweight Champion - Joe Louis called a halt to the bout after
the 5' 11" 205 lb. 'Jimmy James' was floored '3-times in Round 3.

'Big Train' at 202 lbs. used his height and longer reach, to negate any attempts
by the quick-handed Rossette to score with his fast combinations.

Amos dropped Rossette hard in Round 3, with a crushing right hand. And
follow up right hands dropped the San Diego-based heavyweight 'two'
more times, forcing an 'automatic' stoppage.

The 'Big Train' improves to 40-8-1 (23 KO's), and is ranked as the #10
Heavyweight.

'Jimmy James' Rossette falls to 11-3-0. Rossette was hoping for his 'second'
upset win in a row. In his last bout, he scored a Decision win over Tony Doyle in Las Vegas.

Joe Louis, 'I want to thank the Memorial Coliseum fans for their warm welcome.
Both fighters put on a good clean show, the way it should be in the ring.'

 

March 11, 1967

'Cassius Clay Will Agree To Go West, and Face Amos Lincoln, and Thad Spencer'

Heavyweight Champion - Cassius Clay has agreed in principal to 'Go West' and take on
'two' California Heavyweights, if he is successful in defending his 'Crown' versus Zora Folley
at Madison Square Garden on March 22, 1967.

Walter Minskoff, has a 'signed contract' for Cassius Clay to come to the Cow Palace in
Daly City, California to defend his Championship against 'Top-Ranked' - Thad 'Babe' Spencer,
for a bout set in July.

But before facing Thad Spencer, the Champion has agreed to face #10 Heavyweight -
Amos 'Big Train' Lincoln, for a possible early-May 1967 date.

Amos 'Big Train' Lincoln 40-8-1 (23 KO's) and Jimmy 'The King' Fletcher
20-5-3 (18 KO's) will go at it for 'third time'.

What is at stake. If 'Big Train' wins, he will fight the Heavyweight Champion -
Cassius Clay in May, in Los Angeles.

If 'The King' wins, he wants to fight former 2-Time Heavyweight Champion
Floyd Patterson.

Pre-Fight Talk;

Amos Lincoln, 'This guy's a bum. He's a big show-off. He's got no heart. Guys like him are easy'

Jimmy Fletcher, 'I have only two words to say. We'll see.'

In their first fight, back in July 1964, Amos Lincoln suffered a 'cut-eye' and
the bout was stopped in the 2nd-Round, as Fletcher was awarded a
KO 2 victory.

In their second fight in February 1965, 'Big Train' stopped (KO 5) Fletcher in a
wild 'slug-fest', in which both Heavyweights were staggered.

The 30 year-old Lincoln was ranked as high as the #3 Heavyweight back in
October 1966, but an 'upset' loss to Johnny Persol in New York on
October 21 has set him back to the #10 position. Amos has rebounded
with '2' straight wins, including a (KO 3) over 'Jimmy James' Rossette only
7-days ago.

Amos 'Big Train' Lincoln, 'I'm going to flatten that 'big mouth bum'. He got lucky
when he cut me in our first fight. I was smashing him all over the place, and
he landed one lucky right hand that cut my eye. In the our second fight, you saw
the real 'Big Train', as I ran over him and left him on the tracks for the vultures to
pick at his carcass.'
