On a more serious note, I think Gamboa's potential is greater. Mijares might be more technically skilled, but Gamboa edges him in speed and reflexes. Both could become very special fighters (which I think they will).
I can agree with that. Honestly though when I see Gamboa fight the first thing that pops into my head is freakish speed and reflexes like RJJ, stamina, ring generalship and confidence of Whitaker, and power (including one punch power) of Tito. Nasty combination there. I would be shocked if he doesn't turn into a "once in a lifetime" fighter. I know thats really stretching to most people, but im betting the house on him
I have high hopes for him too. Let's pray he doesn't fall short like Judah or fall way short like Bojado. I don't think we will though.
I'm not so convinced mate, he doesn't have the complete package like Jones. Jones was much more well rounded as a fighter, better movement, more power, more angles, tighter defensively in close. Gamboa looks good, but i question especially his in-fighting ability. The jury is certainly out for me until he steps it up. I think he will struggle with pressure fighters, due to his style. Pressure negates his boxing ability as he doesn't move particularly well, and will also give his defense which is based almost exclusively on reflex and head movement a lot of trouble. Its very hard to avoid punches when thrown in combination from close quarters. Definitely an interesting prospect however. I don't disagree, that he does have "special" qualities, that not many fighters possess. The question is, can he make them effective??? So far he has pushed almost every opponent back... Lets see how he copes with someone who is bigger, or can make him fight off the back foot predominantly.
I don't think Mijares is god like. His skills could potentially place him within the top p4p tiers of the sport, however i don't see anything particularly "special" about him.... Not like i see with Dawson, or Cotto, or Cazlaghe or Mayweather at least right now. I see him being just behind these guys based on skills alone right now. I would like to see more of him first, against better opposition. Some of his performances are not overwhelmingly convincing, for a "GOD" like fighter. For instance, Roy Jones was a god like fighter. He would have DESTROYED his previous opponent based on p4p ability. I just don't see that in Mijares yet. Don't get me wrong, technically he is very sharp... superb even. But God like is a whole different level.
Well you know, the 'Boxing God' is something that changes, it's something like Hinduism mate, lots of different entities within the God and at different points one of the entities becomes the main 'God' so to speak. Right now, it's Mijares, if Gamboa exceeds Mijares' level P4P, he himself becomes 'God of Boxing', or simply 'God'. Then Cristian will just become a main prophet, like the past prime Calzaghe has become and we'll all convert to a new religion with a new set of rules called 'Yuriorkism'. I think I'll model it after some form of old Druid-esque faith, IF and a big IF he exceeds God Mijares.:yep
Dawson, Cotto, the CURRENT Mayweather and the CURRENT Calzaghe being more supernatural than Mijares P4P? The only 1 in the list that even is currently a supernatural is Calzaghe, but he's fading fast mate and it'll all be coming to a close soon for his career, much to my sadness, it's been quite an interesting run as a permanent fan of Joe... my favourite fighter of all time.:yep
Not sure what weight he fought in the amatuers, but his power hasn't been particularly impressive for me. Perhaps he will start to sit down more on his punches now, but in a lot of his fights i have seen, he is a doubles hitter, not a triples or home run. As his opposition steps up, i doubt he will be a knockout puncher, i see his current KO ratio being more to do with the skill disparity between himself and his opponent.
Do you know how badly Mijares beats Cotto and Dawson P4P? I've got him over the current versions of Calzaghe and Mayweather also P4P H2H, comfortably. A lot of these lower weight guys are very underrated in the skills department, Dawson's skills for example are very good, but especially so because the LHW division is void of a lot of really skilled fighters. I'd easily top a 175 version of Fernando Montiel to KTFO Chad Dawson for example, a guy that Mijares is soon to **** silly in the ring.:yep
