Do you watch Monzon's fights? He was just as big a monster and he didn#t have the excuse of brain damage.

I think its important to seperate mental resolve inside the ring from outside the ring. Dealing with real life situations clearly wasn't Valero's strong point. But thats very different from having that fighting mentality to dig deep when it matters in an actual fight. Very different things. We've seen many a case of flawed geniuses in sport.

We saw promising signs from Valero in this respect. A lot of fighters shrink when they've been badly cut or at the very least get on their bike and take a cautious approach. Especially when they've got the beating of their opponent. But Valero didn't change anything, if anything he became even more ruthless in destroying DeMarco. It's true we never saw him tested in the respect of somebody actually being on a level pegging with him or even beating him in a fight. Thats why they'll always be 'what ifs'.

It likely would have taken somebody very good to ask those questions of Valero and I don't think Acosta would neccessarily be one of them. If Brandon Rios can pin him down, batter him then stop him I hate to think what the more dynamic and fleet footed Valero would have done.

    Nobhead much?

Valero for me, was a wasted talent - much like Sanchez (through no fault of his own mind). Both could of gone so far.

Thanks a bunch for posting this. I've seen pretty much all his fights and I also think he would have made the 140 and eventually 147 divisions very interesting indeed.
The whole 'one dimensional brawler' thing has always irked me. He had so much more to his game.
