I think all of us like 15 rounds better. A 12 round fight is 2,160 seconds. 180 seconds ( 3 minutes ) in round x 12 = 2,160 seconds of action. Simple enough? What if we went to 15 rounds, but changed the timing of each round to 2 1/2 minutes a round or 150 seconds per round 150 seconds ( 2 1/2 minutes ) x 15 rounds = 2,250 seconds. We'd actually have 90 seconds more of total action, in theory, the fighters could offer more action by not gassing out as much in a given round. I think the scoring would be easier in 15 rounds. Networks would also be able to slip in more commercials $$$ in a distance fight. Whatever 3 more minutes of commercials is worth, you'd get that in a distance fight. I'm not proposing changing the 1-minute rest between rounds. Not perfect, but 15 rounds would be back, just in a different way. Is this a terrible idea? Maybe. Just putting it out there.
I could warm up to it. And it could be safer. Guys tend to get really hurt when they are tired. I'm sure the networks would like it. While it would not be old school 15 rounds, it would be more action that what we have today. The 12 round format your more prone to draws. The odd number of rounds make draws less common.
Those rules would severly favor the more explosive starters and power punchers with aggressive style...( im for that)..but... People don't realize 30 seconds taken off 15 rounds is 30 minutes of punching . A 12 round fight at 3 minutes is 36 minutes ..which is actually two more rounds. The thing is fighters will pace themselves more if the fight is longer, that means LESS punches are thrown. How about switch 10 rounders to 11 rounds and 12 rounders to 13 rounds and 15 rounds in title fights with 2:30 minutes each round. Boxing has enough trouble scoring fights let alone changing rules...oh boy! I probably have added wrong here..but less rounds equal more punching unless time is manipulated with the current 12 which 15 rnds at 2:30 minutes could make different guys fight harder ...but doing 15 rounds at 3 minutes will slow down action.
Interesting thought, but I only accept all or nothing when it comes to 15 rounds. 15 rounds should've been an untouchable rule, 15 rounds separated the boys from the men, 15 rounds should be back in all of it's glory and stamina requirements
You added wrong. 30 seconds taken off 15 rounds is only 7.5 minutes of action taken away. You'd get more action, I think under the format I aired. With more rounds to score, knockdown 10-8 rounds would be slightly less impactful.
I'm fine with 12 rounds personally. I believe Ali would have been still alive if there was 12 rounds in his days.
I agree totally; for all the (rightfully so to protect, in theory) changes that have been implemented, how many deaths in the ring, % wise, occurred after the 12th round sounded? If I'm wrong, I'll accept that and apologize.
I've watched some women's boxing and I'm not really a fan of the shorter rounds. It just doesn't seem to gell as well. Interesting idea though. I think just having consistent medical checks, and stopping mismatches.
that's gay, y not just have 15 rd. fights again? I think the 3 minute rd. should stay as is, I think fights should have stayed 15 rds. too
I like the idea but in my opinion thinking that this change would lessen injury to boxers is wishful thinking. Fighters will always find a way to fight, and people will get hurt. There have been, relatively speaking, peaceful 20 round affairs. In contrast there have also been some absolutely brain numbing wars scheduled for ten rounds. Two and a half minutes instead of three per round might reduce the amount of time a fighter spends while tired and vulnerable. It might also coerce fighters into fighting harder under a shorter amount of time. They might also survive a two and a half minute round as opposed to a three minute round and receive needless punishment with an additional stanza. Trying to curb injury in a fight is like trying to stop weeds from growing in a soccer field, I reckon.
