I've thought of an idea in which we could change boxing so that there is only one world champion per division and yet still appease the sanctioning bodies (as they wont go away will they).

The idea would be to bring in commitee which rules all of boxing (like fifa for football/soccer). they would be given the rankings of each recognised sanctioning body (WBC, WBA, WBO, IBF) in order to compile there own rankings (this is in order to sanction who fights the one world champion after he has been picked).

Firstly to pick the world champion all the four current champs would face of in 2 semi finals and a final.

After the champ has been picked he would chose a sanctioning body to represent, all other sanctioning bodies would still have a champion but they would be called the champion of that sanction and not world champion thus there being only one world champion.

from there each sanctioning body would be allowed to elect there champion to face of for the world championship thus alowing there fighter to become world champion if he wins and the world championship would be called after that sanction to which he was champion.

this would be an improvement for boxing as the fans would (should get to see better fights with no avoidance, boxers would get ripped of less by the sanctioning bodies as they would have to temp the best fighters to fight for them in order for the sanction to have a world champion. Plus we'd know who the real champ was.

ill put it in example by using the welterweight division.

firstly all the 4 champs would face off in a 2 semi finals and a final

sugar shane mosley v andre verto and manny pacquaio v isaac hlaswayo
    final = mosley beating pacquaio
mosley was WBA champ so that becomes WBA World Championship
the others become just WBC Championship, WBO championship etc

from there each sanctioning body can elect there champ to fight the world champ in turns ie wbc then wbo then ibo whilst still having there own championship fights as well

if Pacquaio gets a rematch and wins he becomes world champ and the WBO World champion and Mosley becomes just the WBA Champion

i know theres flaws but its definately IMO something that could be worked on and could work plus we would get some great fights in the semi/final stages and if boxers feel they are getting overlooked they can switch sanctions and look for a shot through them

oh i forgot -in prep of making the world champ if there are undisputed champions they are replaced by by the main commitee by whomever is classed as the top 4 to make up the numbers.

also if a current world champ retires then the semi/finals are repeated to make a new world champ

How about HBO and SHowtime, just pick one title and ban the rest from there networks, IBF would be the best, it is located inside the USA, so it comes under USA federal law. the rest would just disappear.

    Will never happen.
They want to market more fighters as champions, making 1 star generates less money than making 3 or 4 per division.
It's just a marketing ploy that all the boxers like, because they can claim to be world champions.

:thumbsup A great read and some good ideas! Now Chatty mate, all you have to do is convince those greedy ******* promoters, the sanctioning bodies and the tv companies to consider a good idea and we may get somewhere. Good luck with that because no matter how sensible your idea is (And I must admit it makes perfect sense to me!!) those in power would never agree to it!

Excellent idea, it's what the NWA did in wrestling in the 70's and 80's. There were 5 or 6 wrestling federations that each had their own champ, and they would take turns wrestling the world champion. Of course with wrestling the heads of the federations would determine who would win the "world" championship based on who they thought would bring in more money when he would visit their region (Usually Ric Flair). the champion would travel from region to region, wrestling the regions current champ or most popular wrestler until they dtermined it wa time for him to lose.

How about get rid of the sanctioning bodies.

What is a boxer suppose to take home if he has to pay all the sanctioning bodies? They're not a non profit organization. The simple answer would be one governing body.

It will never happen. Why would the head of these organization give up their fat paycheck? Until someone answer that one this is all a dream.

too be fair i would never expect it too happen but it could actually make more money for boxing than having several champs.

Firstly you would have the bouts to crown the champ which i imagine most would do great numbers. The other three would sort of become no 1 con tenders but could still be called champs (just not world champ)

plus we would get a champion who could only fight the three top boxers in each division and could not go around avoiding fighters.

also i think people have stopped caring about the abc titles as marquez v mayweather showed - no titles were on the line.

the problem with the ring championship is that it is mostly vacant as it is not a recognised title and therefore the boxers dont fight for it unless they are also unifying the other titles. check out the ring champs at the minute i think there is only about 7 in all the weights
