I was just watching bare knuckle boxing BKB 16 and overheard the commentator mention that in the event of a draw they simply do an extra round, I thought this was a brilliant idea personally, one more round to settle the fight, imagine the action, tension and anticipation you would get!.

What are your thoughts on this in boxing? I also like how the judges reveal their scores after every round in bkb something else i would like to see in boxing.

Why? Some fights are draws. You don't need to eliminate the concept of a draw. There is nothing wrong with draws in itself. The issue people generally have is with judges which your idea doesn't fix. It also changes fights entirely. You know how some guys give their all in the final round? That potentially won't happen in close fights anymore because you need to reserve energy for the event of a 13th round that may not even come. AND you have to consider the energy dump that comes from thinking you're done in the fight and then having to fight for 3 more minutes. You'd see some exhausted sloppy **** I think.

It would be better to make fights 13 rounds instead.

Could still end up in a draw.. Knockdowns, point deductions, even rounds etc.

But it would lessen the amount of draws we see substantially.

Horrible idea. We should have MORE draws, not less. Anyone who doesn't see boxing is one of the most subjective sports is deluding themselves.

If anything, judges should be encouraged to score rounds even more often unless one fighter clearly won the round. The way we get wacky decisions is when judges feel obligated to score one way or another in a very close round. Then those rounds can outbalance the more clearly won rounds. That would probably not even create as many extra draws as it would eliminate more questionable decisions, like Kovalev Ward I, which would doubtlessly been scored to Kovalev under that scenario.

The only issues with an extra round for me is, it causes confusion. Both fighters will have committed their strategy to 12 rounds. That means at least for a high level fighter, spreading out your stamina evenly over those 12 rounds. Having a CHANCE of an extra round means that they will adapt their strategy around that. And that likely means that they will need to conserve a bit of stamina in case of that last round. That will lead to more 'safe' and defensive fights. Nobody wants that. I don't mind a chess match, but it has to be exciting. People will be playing it safe to just to keep a bit of energy in the bag for round 13.

Then you've obviously got the issue of ending the 12 rounds to get a decision, then reading it out, then restarting again. That's just ludicrous as far as I'm concerned. They'll be in recovery mode by the time the results are read out and they will struggle to get back in a good enough state to fight.

Do we honestly see that many draws?

Wilder-Fury was the first WBC HW draw since 2006. The one before that was in 93
*It was the first HW championship draw since 2006.

And the general consensus is that those were close fights.

There has been a ton of draws in big fights recently, but this is not the solution. There isn't a problem with draws, sometimes fighters are just even on amy given night, it is the corruption that needs to be weeded out.

go back to the olden days where the fight doesn't end until someone quits or gets ko'd.

Yes under over 12 rounds they could be rightfully scored a draw. That isn't the point.

K-1 was what, 5 rounds? Huge difference between tacking on a 13th and a 6th. Championship fights are 12 rounds. That’s what they train for and what they base a fight plan around.
