Often on this forum people talk about how X was injured and hence is excused from a poor performance or even a stoppage loss. I find this quite bizarre. Boxing is a sport where you win by damaging your opponent, whether that's hitting them more than they hit you, or hitting them hard enough that they're on their backs, or hitting them enough that they're injured and can't carry on.

Boxing is about toughness. Boxers aren't excused knockout losses because their chins weren't strong enough, so why should they be excused if their hands, skin, muscles or whatever aren't strong enough.

The big one is Vitali losing via tko to Lewis. Lennox split Klitchko's face open so badly that the doctor said he couldn't continue. Lewis inflicted that damage on Vitali. Hence he stopped Vitali. It doesn't matter that Lewis was fading.

Another would be Mayweather broke his hand against Castillo which affected his performance. I had him losing but floyd fans say it was close because of the hand. So what? He broke his hand fighting Castillo. It wasn't as if Castillo had illegal steel implants in his jaw.

Toughness as a trait is no different to heart, chin, power, stamina etc and certainly should not trump all others.

If they fight, they fight. Training should get them as close to 100% as they're going to get.

all true. in time all that matters is a W or L on their record.
hamed did it a couple of times, explaining away a poor performance on an injury or flu. just get on with it,no-one cares.
i like calzaghe on this front, the guys got glass fists but he never moans about it. maybe cos he aint lost.

the only exception i can think of is benitez breaking his ankle in the ring.
otherwise i agree any injuries sustained in the ring after the bell rings are not excuses for losing.

Thats the thing, it also depends on the injurie. If you have a bad one like a messed up knee all the training in the world aint gonna help you.

say what you want but... they ARE excuses.

Case in point... Vasquez vs Marquez...

He can say he lost because of his broken nose, and the next two fights prove that... so in effect, his broken nose is an excuse, AND TRUE.

He was injured because Marquez broke his nose and legitimately stopped him. It's an excuse sure, but it doesn't change the very real fact Marquez beat him into submission

If they go into the fight injured then thats up to them and it doesn't excuse their performance afterwards. A fighter doesnt get let off a loss because he didnt train hard enough and gassed out, now does he?

A injury caused in the ring is a direct result of the physical confrontation and therefore should be acredited to the opponent.

Fair enough, if they are smart and have a bad injurie they should not take the fight.

if the nose was broken prior to stepping into the ring it is an excuse. if it was broken during the fight, it is not an excuse.

I think there's some mitigation if it's an injury sustained before the fight or during the course of the fight and not due to his opponent, say like Monte Barrett tearing up his knee against Valuev, Lacy tearing his labrum against Tsypko, Gatti consistently breaking his hands, etc. It doesn't mitigate when it's an injury people usually fight through though, like Vitali suffering the same injury as Lacy yet quitting against Chris Byrd, or if the injury was caused by the other fighter's punches, like Vasquez-Marquez I. And you get extra props if it's an injury guys usually don't fight through but you fight through it anyway, like Abraham against Miranda.

I disagree completely for a variety of reasons, but I can't be bothered with a lengthy and detailed post tonight, so I'll be as brief as possible and then disappear:

During the Wlad-Tony Thompson fight, at one point they became entangled and fell to the floor together in a heap. Thompson hurt his leg, got a minute to recover, got back up and carried on with his ****ing dismal performance.

But this incident brings up a very real possibility which means I can never agree with your position MancMex.

Wlad Klitschko is huge. Say he had been fighting someone else, a good fighter, say he had been fighting Lennox Lewis, hypothetically. Lewis is dominating. Well up on the scorecards, pushing for a stoppage. They clinch. They stumble and fall. It is neither man's fault, they simply became entangled and fell. Wlad lands with his full weight on Lennox's leg. His leg breaks, as Wlad is 250lbs.

Should Lennox get a '1' in the loss column and Wlad get a '1' in the win column because Lewis's leg bone was not of sufficient "toughness" to withstand 250lbs falling on it accidentally??

That injury would have nothing to do with punches or combat - therefore NO CONTEST is the only acceptable outcome.

    Peace :thumbsup
