Its not the same thing, that is why I'm talking relativity.

This thread was made to criticize those who think Cotto quit. My intention is to show that I'm an no sadist or crazy, but a lover of boxing who thinks Cotto quit. I don't think think he sucks or anything like that, but he did quit.

Have you even bothered to read all the posts in this thread? Mate, he absolutely did not quit, and that's that. Enough of this now. The guy was beaten almost to a pulp, he took a knee desperately trying to recover, and his uncle saw what a state he was in and rightly stepped in forcing the referee to stop it. Miguel Cotto did not take part in the decision to end the fight, so he cannot be said to have quit. If he had not rose to beat the count, he would've chosen to end the contest, but that simply didn't happen and you can't just say he did when he did not.

I genuinely believe that you don't realize that you are in fact a sadist. You are conveying disappointment in a man who desperately needed a brief respite from the unbelievable pressure he was under to muster enough strength to battle on. You are conveying disappointment in a man who had given his courage, his blood, his energy, to entertaining us in a brutal, brilliant boxing match, and we should be thankful for that, not critical that he didn't take enough punishment or didn't shed enough blood to satisfy you- though there was an enormous amount of punishment and blood anyway IMO.

There honestly isn't any point in us carrying on this debate as clearly our two points of view are far too different to ever reconcile. I do ask you though, to read my posts on this, to consider what you shouted at the tv during the Benn-McClennan fight when Gerald McClennan did the exact same thing that Cotto did in round 11, to try and begin to understand the awesome physical pain and exhaustion that must have been enveloping Miguel Cotto at the time of the 2nd knee, to appreciate Evangelista Cotto's emotions at that time seeing his nephew's face spewing blood, knowing his wife and children were at ringside.

Ask yourself: why would it have been better for Miguel Cotto, for Kenny Bayless, for Evaneglista Cotto, for you, for me, to be complicit in a brutal and bloody knockout, that may have caused permenant damage to an already beaten man? Why did Miguel Cotto's acceptance that he was in trouble engender feelings of anger, frustration, and scorn in you?

I love boxing with my whole heart, and I'm sorry, but although I accept you are maybe not a bad person as I do not know you so can't judge you, I do believe that you and the others you have commented on this thread who share your views, are a danger to boxing, and should abandon the sport and watch UFC or something similar.

Anyone who sees a man drop to one knee with blood all over his face, who you have just watched take heavy punishment to the face and head for a prolonged period, and who would even dare doubt the man's heart or criticize him for succumbing momentarily to physical pain and pressure, does not belong in a sport called 'The Noble Art'.

I'm genuinely not being derogatory or trying to insult you, I truly think that you would find the satisfaction you demand from UFC rather than boxing. Your values and beliefs do not belong in a 21st century boxing ring, where us 21st century boxing fans are proud of our great boxers and proud of our great fights, and do not desire, as a poster called Asterion called for earlier in this thread, for a beaten and bloody man to 'take more punches' because 'he could'.

    That is not boxing.

    Enough.

You did not answer my question,
"but why is it so important to you to argue this point so much considering that he and Marg. had put in 10 + rounds of brutal boxing. It's kind of strange."

for the record when i said Morales quit in reply to the Cotto is a quitter thread, i was just playing devil's advocate because the thread starter is probably a Mexican. I know Morales is a true warrior and ultimate badass.

    Great post!

You are dead on. Sometimes I think that those haters are MMA followers who came to bring down the sport of boxing. A true fan wouldn't take away anything from a guy like Cotto fighting his heart out just to give us a show. If Cotto was a quitter, than he wouldn't have survived and won against Torres nor Corley.

I agree. Too big a deal is made over the word itself, not everyone is saying "oh man he quit like such a little *****" bull**** comments like that etc, in my opinion he quit when he walked backwards from Margo and took a knee before any punches were landed.

I don't say this in a negative way, as it was his best option career-wise, and if he went on to recieve a far more vicious beating it would have been much more likely to be a career wrecking beating.

I suppose quit isn't a great word as technically his corner stopped the fight, i would say maybe submitted is a better word.

Good post. Quit has a negative conotation, which is why people are getting so upset. Fighters quit all the time. It's a brutal sport. These guys know their bodies better than anyone else. They are the best ones to make that call.

it's cotto's corner that threw the towel. they saw that cotto is a beaten man. the ref saw it and stopped the fight. cotto would have continued if his corner did not throw the towel. so how can you say that cotto quit? i think cotto knew that he was a beaten man but he did not say "no mas!" so how can cotto be accused of quitting?
