No it seems like he underestimated his ability to absorb punches. Clottey knew when he threw it would connect, but thought Pac wouldn't be able to take the punishment like many others thought. Dumb gameplan, anyone with a heartbeat can see Pac throwing 30 punches to his 4 spells easy win for Pac.
Pacman's last credible opponent was clottey in my eyes. A consensus top 5 welterweight and most certainly the best available at the time.
Clottey had no trainer, he wasn't scared of getting knocked out at all, and he didn't come to take a fall. Shut up.
Clottey had two choices keep his shell up and lose rounds on inactivity, or let his hands go and lose rounds on clean connects to the head. I think he did the best he could given the circumstances.
even this thread, even talking about him at this point is overrating him. i don't know man, i don't see how you can score that fight for clottey honestly. it was close but clottey did sweet **** all and it was nothing approaching a robbery. if you're a fan of clottey, maybe you gave him rounds for being the most stationary man in the ring and his wicked ability to nod and smile when getting pummelled in a corner. if you're a fan of cotto, you score it a little more realistically and for cotto.
Clottey went from underrated from overrated very quickly. A fighter isn't underrated if everybody calls him underrated.
Just cuz you think it was a 'flat out robbery' doesnt make it so. The fight was close and Cotto getting the nod sure as hell wasnt any robbery, when the fight was close and Cotto scored a knockdown. Could have gone eather way or a draw.
It's called ring generalship. Manny never let Clottey, a rather cautious and economical fighter to begin with, into the fight. He didn't underperform, he was just fighting out of his league.
I agree that Clottey had the best performance among Pacquiao's recent opponents. But he doesn't deserve a rematch. It was obvious that his strategy wasn't going to win him the fight, yet he kept on doing the same crap even into the later rounds. When you are behind in points in the last couple of rounds, guys who actually want to win don't retreat onto a defensive shell. He had his chance, now let someone else get a crack at Manny who will actually fight and not be scared of getting knocked out.
Clottey barely takes chances and lets fights slide when fights are within his grasp against opposition his level and lower, and on the table to win, its no surprise he put in this kind of performence when faced with the level of fighter that Pac is, imo. And I dont give Clottey much props at all for his showing, and dont think hes done that good compared to Cotto and Marg. Cotto won a round, and made a few others closely contested. Marg hurt Pac and put a hurting on him throughout some rounds. While they got battered and beaten, its because they TRIED. I give no credit to Clottey for not getting battered when he stayed behind his guard the whole night.
i dont know how you can commend a man that sits in a defensive shell the entire fight. thats just cowardly. if he opened up he knew he would get hit bad. thats why he did that. as far as I'm concerned I commend hatton for going in guns blazing compared to clotteys appraoch. and Clottey is a guy that could have took it, he has shown his chin in the past, he just DIDNT WANT TO.
Clottey's game plan sucked, pure and simple. His performance gave a lot of fans the impression that he just wanted to survive that fight.
