I think most of us agree that Joe Calzaghe is in the top 3 pound for pound rankings. Chad Dawson is probably somewhere between #12-#25 for the majority of us. Alot of people believe Chad hasn't done enough to warrant a fight with Joe and that he brings nominal dollars to the table with the risk of being another "Lacy Fight" for JC. I can agree with the former but not the latter of that statement. I think Chad has the right to be in the same ring with Joe, just not make nearly the dollars as Joe. Taking a quick look at the last 2 fights for both men tells me that this is the fight that should happen. Chad beat Johnson and Tarver. Granted one fight was very close and the other was almost a shutout. Joe squeeked by The Legend and annihilated a shot legend. I'd like to put into perspective their last 2 victories and see what you guys think. I will rate Joe and Bernard as 10 on a scale of 1-10, both guys being as good as it gets. Chad would have to receive an 8. Glen Johnson is an 8 as well as he is just as effective as Chad but in different ways. Tarver should be rated a 7 as he beat a tough Clinton Woods which showed he still beats most World Class fighters, just not the Elite ones. Roy Jones should be rated a 5 as he is an avergae fighter now, not World Class anymore. So if we add up the victories for Dawson and Calzaghe, we have 15 points for Calzaghe and 15 for Chad. Obviously this is just a fun way to put things in perspective. Have at it guys and tell me if this is a fair line of thinking.
somehow giving jones a 5 and tarver an 7 doesnt seem fair. maybe it is but i still think dawson would have been KO'd if jones had landed those shots on him.
Thanks for replying zarman, I think Tarver can still compete with World Class fighters whereas Jones really can't. What kind of rating do you have for them within my criteria?
Jones would cause Dawson more problems than Tarver did, Woods was beyond hopeless in that fight and Tarver was'nt much better. On your points ratio id go for 6 for roy and a 5 for tarver so 16-13 if i can count right.
Wow, interesting comment. I find it hard to believe that Roy would present any difficulties for Chad. Tarver at least has a bomb of a left that can ends things quickly. Roy would be out-worked, out-sped and out-gunned vs. Chad. I respect your opinion BadJuju, thanks for replying.
No problem. I just think in flashes roy would present more problems in the periods in rounds Chad appears to have a rest. Granted Chad would be doing the same thing when roy took a breather but i see Roy causing more problems than Tarver did in rest momments chad has. Would more than likely be a Points win for Chad, but by a closer margin than Tarver managed.
That's a unique and interesting way of looking at it, King Dan. Nice post. And I think your ratings are pretty accurate, particularly your rating of Tarver. His win over Woods gets overlooked often.
is this the politest thread in ESB's hostory ? shame there isn't more like it. to put my tuppence worth, if you're saying jones is shot ( he is ) then tarvers not far ahead . he was shite against dawson .shot and shite.
I'd have agreed with you had it not been for Tarvers last fight... against Dawson he looked gassed after a few rounds and there was literally nothing on any of his punches, taking away his last remaining hope for victory. Jones probably threw more punches in his fight and each one of them had bad intentions. Tarver simply looked dreadful. I think JC vs Dawson would be one sided in JC's favour... I think his busy style would lower Dawson's output and exhaust him en route to a comfortable and clear UD. Dawson would also need to be wary of getting hurt. Okay, Calzaghe cant hit that hard these days, but everyone he's fought recently bar Hopkins has been surprised by his power. I personally think it's more the accumulation of these shots and him being fairly heavy handed, plus his body work is overlooked and seems to be the only time he sits down on his punches. He does a lot of subtle things I think go unnoticed and unappreciated. Dawson is very fluid, has exceptionally quick hands and seems to have okay power (seems more stinging than hurtful?), but his footwork is poor when it comes to getting out of danger, he also doesn't have the greatest of defenses and takes rests during rounds. All these things he'd seriously be made to pay for and Calzaghe is tactically astute and aware enough to adapt and put these into practice and make an inexperienced fighter like Dawson pay heavily for. Shot or not, I think some of the punches Jones landed would have switched his lights off, he was getting hurt frequently by Johnson who's punches are wide and looping and more importantly can be seen. Jones throws that right hand and left hook with great speed and power even now. Granted, past the 5th or 6th and he'd be done imo, but he should really be giving Glencoffe a rematch or fighting Diaconu who he or his promoters seem to want no part of.
to be fair I have JC at #1 p4p...he is a great fighter...but to think dawson does not belong in the ring with him is ludacrous...Dawson is a BETTER fighter than RJJ...who cares who he has fought...watch the guy fight...he is big strong and fast...it would be a great fight...if JC wants to retire fine but if he stays dawson is the next logical fight
Jones would have a much higher chance of beating Dawson than Tarver had (very small), because of his punch, in my view. Personally, I view Jones vs. Dawson as a pick'em fight. Jones would easily be the biggest puncher Dawson would have faced and with Dawson's chin, that could make the difference at any point. Jones still has very good speed and he is still precise. If Jones doesn't knock Dawson out, Dawson wins a wide decision. The same cannot be said about Tarver, in my view. With the power his punches had and with the few punches he threw, he didn't even have much of a puncher's chance.
