one thing is certain: if JML beats RM, gamboa-lopez will be huge. the undercard could be Rigondeaux-Vazquez ,Lara-Cintron...to make the Cuba-PR more interesting. Will sell in the MSG like a Yankees world serie
Salido took some monster shots so going the distance is no disappointment unless someone underestimated the IBF champ. Salido's knockdown was legit, but Gamboa wildly missing with his hook helped losing balance, and other than that, I thought Gamboa looked pretty solid, certainly better than most say around here. Joe Cortez however is badly past his prime. He missed a Gamboa knockdown when Salido's knee touched the canvas, and while Yuri did get overexcited and landed behind Salido's head as he was going down, the correct refereeing would've been a mandatory 8 count for the knockdown than a single point deduction for the accidental foul. The IBF and WBA has no two-point penalty rules I believe, so instead of 10-10 under the 10 point must system, the correct score should've been 10-8 for Gamboa. All in all, I give Gamboa a solid B in his biggest fight to date, he's the unified FW champion unless the WBA says otherwise (after putting the sanctioning fee in the pocket), but as vs. Barros, it's clear that Yuri has some work to do. In fact, I'd still suggest change of trainers, joining Rigo and Lara with Ronnie Shields sound like a good idea. In the pros it's more about timing and adaptability than speed a quick scores, and an experienced pro trainer with solid pro sparring partners can help a lot.
i still give gamboa the edge but not that much anymore. juanma can punch, much harder than salido. it will be an interesting match up. can't wait!
Marquez is a badly faded career bantamweight who has no business at 126lbs - or in boxing being the stepping stone for young fighters. His glory days are well past behind him, and that's why Top Rank is matching him with the young lion. Not that TR fighters haven't been upset lately, but on paper, Lopez should be the clear favorite.
I think Gamboa's power has been wwaaaayyyyyy overrated. But his physical conditioning and dedication to the gym will take him very far. He also love to throw 1-2, 1-2, 1-2 combinations a little too much. A smart fighter will time him and connect him good. But Salido, as tough as he is, can't punch. Now, is Lopez the right person to beat Gamboa??? I am not so sure. I am really doubting Lopez dedication to the gym. And his corner has failed to correct the mistakes he makes in the ring. Mistakes that Gamboa, OR MARQUEZ, will find easily. If Juanma can beat Rafa, and depending on how he looks against him, then I will be able to say if he has a chance against Gamboa. For those who don't understand what I mean by 1-2, 1-2, It means left-right, left-right, left- right, He needs to throw 2 or 3 punches with the same hand once in a while to avoid getting timed by the other fighter and so the other fighter can't defend themself just by turning side to side
I am not so concerned about Marquez beating Juanma. what I am afraid is about Juanma defeating himself by running out of steam. Marquez is a past his prime smaller fighter who has made his fame by fighting the same guys over and over. But he know every single trick in the book and can fight 15 rounds if he needs to. So, Lopez can't allow himself to be anything less than 100% for this fight
the only time i remember Lopez going the distance was with Mtawga and he run out of gas,but i always believed he drained himself to make the 122..he did look much better at 126 against Luevano, but Luevano always been average in my book. I think Lopez can beat Gamboa,as much as Gamboa can beat Lopez...and it doesnt mean necesary that Lopez will look tougher than Salido or Gamboa tougher than Mtgawa. It could be a very short fight-going either way.
Wow whoever thinks Gamboa is going to beat Lopez is either an idiot or he's Cuban. Gamboa fought a bum who took him for a ride. I saw so many technical flaws being commited it was a wonder he was fighting to unify the titles. Meanwhile Lopez is getting ready to fight a Marquez which is a true step up. Not to mention he has a chance because he is a much better boxer then Marquez and really doesn't have no where near as many flaws as Gamboa. Had there been the likes of Barrera, Morales, Marquez, and yes the PacMan himself, Gamboa wouldn't have even been a hiccup in the division.
Gam has a lot of gifts that most don't have but unfortunately ALL of those AM fights seem hard to shake. Meaning....he has a lot of holes defensively and he makes a lot of mistakes becuase of having a difficult time sheding the AM habits. I wasn't impressed at all last night. All the things that I was impressed with regarding Gam's talent and abiltity are all still there...but as a pro he hasn't progressed the way he should at this level. A guy like Lopez will eat him up. He needs a new corner b/c the one he has now is not working in my opinion.
the thing is the expectations were to high. people thought gamboa was a super human or something which is unfair. the dude is going to have some tough fights just like anyone the thing is this, salido is a tough sob noone has ko'd him in the last 10 years point blank and in my eyes salido was ko'd in the 12th and then he used that lil smack on the backside of the head as an excuse to get a bunch of time to get back up
i was surprised of how so many were underestimating Salido, somebody with his experience and career. And of course Gamboa isnt superman.I remember seen Erik Morales struggling against Gaty Espadas-when Morales was in his prime, and we all saw Lopez struggling with Mtagwa. And still doesnt take anything away from Morales and Lopez.Style's make a fight. Gamboa needs to adjust better.I agree his corner isnt the best. But i wonder if he will feel comfortable with somebody else.
