Great White Hoax is exactly what this hick was and is. Difference being the rest of the world were able to call it in real time. Without needing to wait for the inevitable exposure (see Andre Ward) The way the dumbyanks built him up to be the white Marvin Hagler was a disgrace. The talk of Calzaghe ducking the most one dimensional american level banger I've seen for years was equally as nauseating. The only legacy a come forwards american level plodder like Pavlik was ever destined for was the one he's ended up with. Alky hick comes full circle and the yanks cannot understand why he isn't sugar ray robinson :tired
Was never terribly impressed with Taylor and felt he was being over-rated. That being said, I can say I predicted Pavlik would KO him. I was a round or two off if I remember correctly. I was not surprised by the KO at all.
Pavlik was f'n bad ass. Going up to 168 to fight Nard was while commendable. it was a career ender. He just wasn't the same. Alcohol problems etc. Pavlik Williams can still be made. Not sure if Hopkins ever fought Taylor. or Taylor Williams??!!
Considering he fought Taylor II at 166 (from memory) - making the jump to 170 (I think) to fight an old man Hopkins who Calzaghe had made look 70 was less than stellar from the great white hoax who walks around at 190+
I think it demoralized Manny Steward for sure. "When he came out for the next round like nuthin' even happened, I said, we got a problem. (shaking his head he mutters under his breath, "he came out live nothin' even happened. Like nuttin even happened.) That was Steward at the post fight presser.
We've discussed it a hundred times, but HBO actually missed calling or highlighting the actual "beginning of the end." It started with a picture perfect 1-2 in the center of the ring.
Why are you bringing up such old GREAT times for me? Do you know that I was there in AC on Sept 29th 2007??? Did you know that I had to drive all the back from Maine to NJ that Saturday, finishing our vacation? 6 hrs to get home...take a 1 hr break & then back in the car for 2 more hrs to AC. BUT IT WAS WELL WORTH IT!!!:!: Watching the HBO replay, you know when the KO is coming when Merchant says, "Nobody likes to get hit"... Within 5 seconds, KP hits Taylor with a good right hand that backs him up a bit. Kelly saw his, moved in a nailed him with an even better right & thats when Taylor when into the corner & within seconds, it was over & Pavlik was the New MW Champ! Great memories!!!:good
Jermain Taylor was ruined by his management and Manny Steward. They put him in with smaller 154lb (Winky Wright, COREY FREAKING SPINKS, Kassim Ouma) guys who couldn't bust a grape before putting him in with arguably the biggest, strongest and hardest hitting middleweight in boxing at the time. And I don't know what the hell Manny was doing, but Taylor's defense was absolute garbage. I'm no boxing expert, but even I could see that he needed to keep his damn hands up more. And what is this touching your forehead with your glove thing. If I was an opposing trainer, I would have been telling my fighter to time that move and clock him as soon as he moves that glove away from his face. And after all of that, he still kicked Carl Froch's ass before gassing out. I think he can be saved, but he is going to need a trainer that will teach him some damn DEFENSE! Maybe the Mayweathers could do something with him. I don't know about being a middleweight though. When you lose so much weight that you start to lose muscle, the outcome is seldom good. See RJJ.
Pascal still managed to rock Hopkins on two different occasions in their rematch and has not fought since so how can we say he's ruined?
OMG that was a ****ing great great night man. Pavlik was a ****ing animal back in the day even though his only good punch was the 1-2. I remember screaming my ass off once Pavlik got up with his tongue out...I love that btw..yeah no homo.
give lampley a break on that one, he had to interrupt merchant's mumbling ass. Merchant would have rambled straight through the knockout if Lampley let him.
