striking wise anderson might be much better in that deparment. however, i give the advantage in grappling to machida. if they ever fought, i think it will be a stand-up battle. anderson by points.
Let's not forget that Machida once was the most elusive fighter so my guess is he'll go par with striking.. Maybe its going to be a split decision.. I'll go for prime Machida here..
This would come down to precision and durability, and from what we've seen Machida, once he's caught, is not that durable. In a 5 rd fight Silva uses his precision to catch him and ends it quickly there after.
It is an interesting fight but time and time again we seem to find out that Silvas striking in MMA is almost untouchable. The time so often afforded to him because of the mixture of MMA allows him to execute ****ed up ****. The guys who can go all out despite his striking is the wrestlers. We are yet to find a striker with the ability to go all out against him. Tough guys, fast guys, powerful guys like Leben and Vitor have all felt the sword. Machida is awesome but I don't think he has the same mind as Anderson. He wilted against Shogun 1 and was seriously affected against Rampage. I think the difference is that Machida has a few moves that make up a style but Anderson has pretty much every move and you never know which one he is going to bring on you so each fight is a display of art work that could be based around ****ing people up with god knows what.
As much as I love Machida, I think Silva's stronger chin and stronger mentality would make the difference, and he'd either stop Lyoto late or win a decision. In saying that, this would DEFINITELY be the toughest striking test of Silva's life. Machida has the speed, strength and skills to land on the Spider and hurt him, but I just think that Anderson would accustomize to Machida's style after a couple of rounds, and start to land the more damaging strikes. If Machida decided to take him down, then it could get very interesting indeed though. IMO, Machida would be bulkier and stronger than Silva, and could dominate the action that way. But I just don't see it happening, I think Machida would want to strike.
I think it would be a great match-up. Each of them has his strong points over another one. I think Silva striking has a bit larger arsenal. I see Machida faster and more explosive. Although he lost to Jones, in the first round he offered a sample of mastery in striking, of insane speed, incredible explosiveness, non telegraphic capacity and a perfect timing. In those fields i see him a bit superior to Silva. On the other side Silva proved a very good chin and very good adaptability and adjustment capability (flexible). Also Machida, although he has a quite perfect long and medium range, sometimes he seems to have weakness in short range ( exchange of blows in close range). That's how he lost to Shogun Rua in the second match, and got hardly hit by Jones in the second round. However, it doesn't happen all the time, with Rampage and Evans he did a great job in close range as well. Both are very elusive, Machida seems to have a better takedown defense. In elbow strikes field i would give the edge to Silva, on the ground to Machida. Overall i would say the outcome would be pretty much uncertain, perhaps with a slightly advantage for Machida...a winning by UD or split decision, but it can go in other way around.
