cheers for the info Tom:good Your boy Young Mutley made the mistake of his life dropping down to jnr welter after the Ando classic IMO. Mutley is built like a tank, & to think he dragged his body down after the Anderson fight, it was no wonder he was a shadow of his former self against Lynes. We will see the best of Mutley if he gets back to welter, I have no doubt. Mutley has frightening power IMO, but not at light welter, where he is too drained to be a threat. Is Mutley planning to move up again Tom if you dont mind me asking?
Mutley admitted that he thought he could make light-welterweight again with no trouble, especially as he had come up in weight for that British title shot in the first place. But he said that with about a week to go he just couldnt seem to shift the last three pounds in the gym, eventually sitting in a sauna before the weigh-in. We all know what happened next no power, no strength and knocked out. He plans on competing at welterweight again from this year. Mutt had a comeback fight against middleweight Vladimir Borovski in November winning 59-56 after hurting the iron-jawed Russian a couple of times and looked good. Its just getting the opportunities to get himself back in the title mix. Billy Smith is due to fight on that Anderson-Mcintyre undercard, I think against Barry Morrison, and Mutley is going to come up (Billy and Mutt are both trained by Errol Johnson) and take a closer look at the main event.
Tom P - which fight are you referring to here? I think I know but I don't want to jump to the wrong conclusions.
Mutley had him going twice, seriously in the fifth round when Borovski held on for about 30 seconds. The first time, in the second round, was from a quick-handed left-right-left-uppercut forcing him to back-peddle and grab tight. The second time, as mentioned in the fifth, Mutley nailed him with a left hook as Borovski came marching in. Again, he elected to do some serious holding and then ran away for a bit. I managed to get a few words with Borovski, albeit in very broken English (though I wont hold that against him), and he indicated that Mutley was one of the hardest-hitting opponents hed faced. Elle, Im talking about the fight with Lynes. Im not taking anything away from Colin he could have beaten him at any weight with that showing but Mutt was weak and had no snap.
I thought as much. After that fight Mutley admitted he made the weight reasonably well - I remember reading that on BBN. I'm glad you have given Lynes credit for that win - it saves me taking you to task! I agree - the Lynes we saw that night was full of confidence and would have won regardless. I do rate Mutley but what made Lynes win even more impressive for me is that it wasn't him that had home advantage and he took that fight at very short notice. Also showed a lot of bottle by putting his title on the line after only having recently won it.
He got to about 10st 3lbs and was looking dynamite. I was watching him in sparring and thinking that Lynes would be lucky to last into the third. Mutley was battering all his sparring partners, was fit like he was against Michael Jennings and he was focussed. That was seven days before the fight. I go back in the gym a few days later, about four days before the fight, and he is doing the warming down before the contest on the Friday. He still looked sharp, strong, but I asked Errol (Johnson, his trainer) how the weight was going and he said he was stuck on 10st 3lbs, couldnt shift it. Mutt was running with a sweat-suit on. Nothing was happening. He went to Tenerife two weeks before the fight and the weight was dropping off him and he was strong. He gets back to West Brom, goes to the gym in Wednesbury and everything looks hopeful. The weight was still coming of the week before, but in the last week To be honest, he didnt eat the day before the weigh-in. Anyway, he gets up for the weigh-in, makes it fine and he said he felt good. But gets to the Civic on the night of the fight and he feels tired, weak, almost like his blood sugar is too low. Couple that with an excellent jab-and-move gameplan for Lynes and Mutley was never going to do it. He said the making the weight reasonably well bit because, save for two or three days of nothing, he did. Mutley didnt want to take any credit away from Lynes either. Watch out for Mutley this year; he's going to win the British title back at welterweight.
Dont know about him winning the british back this year? If Anderson gets back to his best he will take it from McIntyre easily, there is no-one at domestic level to touch Ando when he is 100% fit and focused. A fit Ando would beat Mut easily this time.
You are not the only one who thought Lynes would be lucky to last in there. Many were predicting a win for Mutley and he himself said Lynes would be in for a shock as he was going to knock him clean out! Your insights into the weight making are interesting but, as you have already suggested, Lynes would have won on that showing - and at any weight, anyway. Its not always just about the win - its also the manner you do it in and you couldn't really fail to be impressed by the way Lynes dominated that fight and stopped Mutley.
To be fair, Lynes is the third best light welterweight in Britain! He would stop Gavin Rees sharpish, and would give pretty much any other 140lb'er a hard time.
Hopefully Lynes can continue to sustain the momentum and reinforce his status in the division beneath Hatton and Witter. :good
We definetly have a very good crop of fighters around the light welter/welter divisions. Just look at the names in each and you see alot of solid class and a couple of stand out fighters such as Witter, Hatton, Ajose, Lynes, Jennings and Ree's (add and detract who ever from those few if you wish). Muttly is a very good performer and can still make a serious dent in the division, especially this side of the atalantic. For the Kevin vs Kevin match I would go for Kevin by ko this time around. The first fight was a good fight but Anderson just did not seem to be in the ring, a much better performance is needed or it may be the end of the line. McIntyre surprised a few people last time. It looks such a good fight. Great to see the Scots still have alot of fight left in them. Whatever the outcome of the fight im sure all British boxing fans will be proud of the display.
I will even go further by saying it will be a clear UD by Kevin or at very least a SD once again by Kevin unless some how we get a big punch and Kevin gets ko'd.
