Boxing is a sport, not a death match. Refs waving fights off when one fighter can no longer compete safely has been normal longer than all of us (besides Djanders and Luis Ortiz) have been alive.

It was plain to see Valenzuela has disgusting punch resistance and he was about to get HL reel KO'd in ugly fashion

Had he not stopped it, hospitalization was going to be the natural conclusion. Valenzuela was the A-side and one of the hottest prospects in the sport. This wasn't some screw job. Corona gave him too much time to recover from the first KO.

Yeah, I'll be among the first to chide a referee for jumping in prematurely, but that one was a fair stop by my lights, given the clean punishment he was absorbing after having been badly hurt combined with the youth of these guys and the sub-championship stakes. Save a young fighter from unnecessary battering and give him a chance to come again another day.

Replace "Knocked out at 1:55 of the fourth round" with "Time of death 1:55 of the fourth round" and fans will be happy.

It was decided in the ring. Dude was clearly out of it. He was getting hit repeatedly with very hard shots and looking worse with every one. No need to see the guy a crumpled and broken mess twitching on the canvas.

Yeah, and that's exactly what SHOULD have happened, if this squeamish ref didn't interfere!

Agreed. He was more or less out on his feet. He wasn't countering.

lol the drama out of some of you. He's in a sport where people get knocked out. And that's what we want to see.

This was a good stop. The outcome was in no doubt and the only thing to do was spare Valenzuela further injury or worse.

And this is California, too. One tragedy and the sport is likely to be banned state-wide.

Wasn't Valenzuela the house fighter here? Certainly seemed to me the official was inclined to favor him rather than De Los Santos.

Clean knockouts are fine. It's the repated-bludgeonings like we were seeing here that **** up a fighter for good.
