Well compared with Athens, the scoring has definitely been gutted down in terms of quality punches. For example, you would have scores in Athens like 42-35. I don't think anyone has hit 25 points so far. That said, scoring system sucks. The fact that a knockdown is only worth 1 point and hard punches to the body are not rewarded is just wrong. Then add the incompetence of the judges and you have a recipe for disaster.
The body punches I understand; they're hard to see. The KD thing I agree with because force of a blow isn't supposed to count, it's too subjective to judge.
I don't watch tons of amateur boxing so am definitely not qualified to score the fights. Did you think that Andrade won the fight?
From what I could see, I thought so. I did miss a fair bit of the fight so I can't accurately comment. What's pissing me off more is the favoritism shown towards Chinese fighters and in some cases Cuban fighters. While, as Campbell put it; they systematically have eliminated the US and Russian teams.
In 25 years as a boxing fan never found anyone who like the system amateurs are using now. You are the first one. Do you really like when a boxer gets three points ahead in the first round and then runs and holds for three rounds???????? I am not saying that happens to the american. He lost, period. But the system sucks!!
Shawn didn't get robbed, he fought stupid against the guy. It was a miracle he even won the Olympic Trials.
I'll say that boxing under this system, in the USA, makes perfect sense. It's a lot easier to follow these rules and box under these where the criteria is universal rather than under a system like 10 point must (or even 20 point must that used to be used in the amateurs) where things are arbitrary and subjective.
Andrade got jobbed. How the **** anyone can argue against that can **** off. The Korean got a point for just about every landed shot, Andrade got scored about 1 out of every 3 shots. It wasn't really that close.
