Wow, what a terrific fight this was! (yes, seeing it very late...was in hospital...long story...) Why does it not come as a surprise to see yet more of the same old bull**** threads in its wake, rather than these two gladiators being given props or their war being discussed in detail? :-( Knowing this board, nobody's going to want to contribute anything positive. Expect "Andrade couldn't even take out this rusty old can in less than 8 rounds, and even then he didn't knock him out!" or "Lucas is featherfisted!" or "these bums have no skills lol! Dirrell would knock them both out on the same night!". The little Bobby Czyz "ESPN 30 Years" package was cool, too. It made me think seriously about ordering a DVD of his fights, and even the most flattering highlight reels rarely do that. Oh - slightly shocked to see Renan St. Juste look so horrible against a supposed gimme opponent. It seems it really doesn't take someone special to stop Dionisio Miranda (but Karmazin's performance still impresses me). Good for Marcus "Upset" Upshaw (yeah, that'll stick...you know it's catchy :yep).
I havent got to see the fight yet. People at my work were talking about what a great fight it was. I expected to come on here and hear about it but instead all the threads consisted of "KLit is an overrated bum" or "Pacqiuao is on HGH*VIDEO PROOF*". I tried to skim through the posts but I couldn't even find anything on it.
I knew whatever PHILLA was going to come out with was going to inevitably rub me up the wrong way. I haven't seen the fight yet...but Andrade always comes to fight, and him showing great sportsmanship is a staple of his. It's impossible to dislike the guy.
I was also wondering why there weren't more threads on this fight. It was an entertaining match, televised, and has some signifigance. Lucas has more left than I thought and actually looked solid in there. Andrade did what he always does and simply wears people down. Lucas could retire since it seems like he won't be able to beat any of the top guys at 168-175 but if he does fight again then he still has something to offer. I'd like to see Andrade stay at 175 now. The top guys at 168 are tied up for awhile and he's been beaten by Bute twice now so 175 would be more interesting. Andrade-Diaconu would be a big fight in Candada and couldn't help but be entertaining. I also think he would make for good matches with Cloud or Johnson. So, good fight where both guys have some options now.
It was a very good fight and both fighters showed class. Excellent performance during and after the fight by both men. We need more of these examples.
In a radio interview yesterday Lucas said that he would retire. That he was happy with Friday's fight as his last fight because he knows they put on a great show and the fans had a feeling of money well spent. That he had trouble getting over the loss to Kessler in a foreign land as a send-off fight, in front of a crowd that had no appreciation for his career. Now, he is happy with the result, he can bow out of the sport with his head held high. Also, Lucas took this fight with no guaranteed payday. Andrade had a guaranteed payday and Lucas' purse is basically a part of the profit from the promotion. He said that going into this fight, it wasn't at all for the money. He wanted to see if he could still compete near the top level of the divison and truly believed that he could beat Andrade.
I totally understand why he'd want to retire having not passed the test he set up for himself, but who wouldn't want to see Eric glove up once more, at least a rematch with Librado? I don't think it was FOTY, but it was top ten so far almost halfway through 2010. Also, was I really the only one surprised at St. Juste coming up bust? I mean, fair play, he is pushing 40 and got a late start in the sport, but he was generating some buzz IIRC. Upshaw damn near had him out a few times.
I'm not sure St-Juste was at his best. He fought Dionisio Miranda recently (17th of April). He's not young, it's not easy to recover fast at 38 or 39. He was not himself on Friday. It was a bad idea to put him on this card. A promoter thing, because Brinkley pulled off and his fight against Bika had to be replaced with something. The something is St-Juste being defeated.
yea St-Juste got thrown in at the last second and paid for it. He did not look sharp like in his last fight.
I mean, it isn't as though Marcus Upshaw is now a force in the division. Good scalp, and probably a decent payday, but he shouldn't be ranked or put anywhere close to a title shot based on this.
this was an excellent fight...if lucas had more power andrade wouldnt have made it to the end of the fight... lucas has a ton of heart for a guy of his age and not ever being a huge puncher
Stephan Larouche, Lucas's coach, explains that the face's skin of Lucas is now very fragile and cuts very easily. At the second round, blood's drops begin to come out from the skin. At this point, it's preferable to go for retirement.
I don't think his wife wants to live again the pain to see her husband with blood all over him. Lucas was very brave Friday, as he was all his career. He's a model for many youngsters, not only boxers. Lucian Bute had the chance to begin his career near him. He saw dedication, hard work and courage. A good path to follow.
