I think what it is with Berto, he got his title early having not really fight anyone credible, since then he has been on the slow burner, fighting fighters he was expected to beat, infact I believe most people perceived that a win over Collazo would be routine for him, particularly given that Collazo had already lost to Hatton, admittedly in a competitive fight, so when he struggled, maybe they thought hmm......, then Berto fought Urango, but got a lot of criticism, rightly or wrongly, for excessive holding in the fight, although he still got the win, then he got a good win over Quintana, but did not look particularly good in the fight, although again, he did get the win. I think the defensive frailties Berto has shown, the lack of solid names on his record when he won his title, the HBO hype machine, and Berto's seemingly primmadonna attitude, which does not do him any favours, is whats hurting his reputation at the moment. I think Berto is a good fighter and his record, with the wins over Urango, Collazo, Quintana, is going from questionable to solid, he just needs to keep it up, however fighting Hernandez does not do him any favours imo, that said, I do think Berto wants to, is willing to step up.
I think Berto has potential but he has to step up his competition already, take the pay cut, fight Mosley and go from there. Gotta live up to the hype man
berto is a great fighter, im now saying hes the best ww, well he might be though.but he still needs the big fights to prove it to me.quintana and collazo or good but he needs to fight the elite guys at his level now.
:good Very well said. Personally, I think when he does make that step up, he's gonna get KO'ed. Shane Mosely woulda sparked him for sure... I was really disappointed that one got canceled. I'd like to see him fight Clottey.
I think it's time for him to step up to the bigger names hes mention. I would still like to see the Mosley fight. The constant complaining to the ref had me upset, has good skills though would admit.
Won the Vacant strap against WBC # 2. Good. Defends agaist Forbes, former 130 Lb champ, then against two 140 lb guys Collazo Urango. Then fought a welter that blown away by PW. Yes he needs to step up and I belive SSM would have become a Champ again if they had fought.
almost lost to ****ing collazo man, completely overhyped and not taking the steps to develop his career that he needs. making a bout with senchenko or zaveck would be a great idea for him right now edit: clottey would ****ing own berto. but i think it would be a solid fight
Berto is a really skillful fighter, I have always found him very impressive before he was a name, Im glad he's become a star today, but I doubt he will ever be a big drawing name, I see a career like Winky Wright in regards to name recognition and that's about it. Having said that I like the idea that he might prove me wrong.
