Andre Berto's trainer, Tony Morgan, on Pacquiao's tremendous success at the higher weight classes...

“One thing I don’t understand is that Manny all of a sudden has almost devastating power. Because he fought all these little guys and he banged them up but he never really destroyed them. He fought a lot of the tough Latin fighters that came in. He fought wars and some of the fights he won you could have said he lost like Marquez. But now he comes up and I think Floyd brought up a very good point in drug testing these guys. Like USADA and UWADA, which is what you use when you go to the Olympics.”

    Pacquiao’s devastation…
“Not saying that Manny’s on anything but I mean you almost go to wonder ‘Damn, he wasn’t knocking anybody dead like this when he was little’. And now he’s just crushing guys. Not too many times does a smaller man just come into a bigger man’s weight class and just destroy them. Not coming from where he came from? 126 or 130. You don’t just come up through the ranks and destroy people like that. Could it be phenomenal plyometrics training and a strict regimen? Yes, I believe in that stuff. But usually you see small things, not devastating things. I don’t want to say anybody’s on steroids because I believe in Manny Pacquiao and I think he’s very talented.”

He would have the semblance of a point if Pac's last fight wasn't a 12 rounder where he threw 1200 punches.

He ignores the fact that fighters can be a lot stronger when they begin making weight comfortably. He also ignores Pacquiao's progression - from being a one-armed bandit executing the same old jab-jab-left, to a two-handed boxer-puncher that's learned how to fully utilize his awkward punches that come from awkward angles.

That's the problem with the likes of Mayweather, Malignaggi and, now, Berto's trainer. They focus too much on him going up in weights, and not bother recognizing his evolution as a boxer.

And another thing....other than the Ricky Hatton fight, where has Pacquiao demonstrated this devestating power that he didn't show in his featherweight days? Ricky getting K'dTFO the way he did, was inevitable with the awful defence he had. And the other two, Oscar and Cotto, were chopped down by an accumulation of punches. People are acting as though Pacquiao has all of a sudden developed dynamite power.

Pac was killing guys when he was little. Won 10 fights at 122lbs, all by knockout. At 112 he was a monster, people he hit looked like they'd been hit with a baseball bat.

He was alot more powerful at those lower weights than he is today. He had one punch power in divisions not known for one punch power.

People just didn't know him back then.

Who did he knock out dead on these higher weights other than Hatton?

He hit David Diaz who most say was a bum with everything before he stopped him.

He hit an Oscar De La Hoya who most say was shot and dead at that weight with everything and never seemed to hurt him badly.

He knocked Cotto down but couldnt stop him it was the ref that thought he had seen enough.

He Threw 1200 punches against Clottey and wasnt even close to knocking Clottey down let alone destroying him.

So where did his fool come up with this "all of a sudden he has devastating power " bull**** and "hes knocking people dead"?Where is this power?does this guy even follow the sport?

    No wonder Berto is ****.

floyd, malignaggi, and now berto's trainer are ignorant. they think pac was just ordinary when he started out but pac is far from ordinary. he was knocking his opponents down even when he was at the lower weights.

and pac already agreed to floyd's test demands so what's the problem, floyd could have fought him this november and exposed him either as a drug cheat or beat him if he will stop taking a-side meth but he didn't and instead went on vacation.

Even if he is right, isnt really surprising that putting weight also makes you punch harder.

It bothers people because his opinion is based on misinformation or lack thereof. He's basing Pac's recent performances by comparing them to opponents from lighter weight classes like Marquez and Morales, who happen to be potentially future ATGs. The fact is Pac has nearly double the amount of rounds needed to KO his opponents at the higher weight classes. Both Morales and Hatton said Pac hit the hardest of all the opponents they have faced. There shouldn't be any surprise that power can move up one division.

Makes me wonder if he's doing this just to make noise for himself and his fighter.

Pacquaio was always ****ing people up. What's that trainer smoking? If he went the distance with Morales (once out of 3 fights), Barrera(who was dropped), and Marquez(dropped a lot), that's because those 3 fighters were that ****en good.

Pacquaio has always been like this, the difference is that now his boxing skills are very sharp and people that weren't paying attention before are now paying attention.

They're scared of him. That trainer's already making excuses for his guy for the bad public beating Berto will take if they ever fight.

Pac has always looked explosive, particularly with his left hand. As he's moved up in weight, he's also faced people accustomed to fighting slower, heavier fighters -- he dropped Cotto with shots he didn't see, because of timing and speed. It wasn't a case of pure power at all. Clottey didn't seem too bothered by Pac's power, only by his combinations, speed and workrate. De La Hoya was broken down very gradually, until he just quit when he realised there was nothing he could do...he couldn't avoid those repeated left hands. Again, not really a case of power. Diaz made a point to stress that it was Pac's SPEED, first and foremost, that gave him so much trouble. He repeatedly stated that.

The only thing I can think of to justify this trainer's line of thought is the Hatton KO, which did indeed look like a pure power type deal. Even then, however, many people have argued that Hatton's punch resistance was on the wane after his bout with Tszyu...Collazo had him in trouble at one point, Floyd broke him down and really softened him up, and even Lazcano staggered him and had him stunned. (Which is exactly when the British ref conveniently broke up the action to tie Hatton's shoelace in the corner.) Hatton's complete lack of defence combined with the fact that he didn't see the punch coming blew him out. It's a great KO, but I don't see how it leads to Pac being on something dodgy...it was Floyd Sr who started that stupid rumour, to try and save face after his training with Hatton proved utterly useless.
