A few months ago, the prevailing wisdom was that Ward had cleaned out 168 and should move to 175. Is that still the case though? At 175 he would have Kovalev. That's a great fight that the fans would want to see. Outside of Kovalev though, the landscape is pretty barren for HBO fighters. At 168, there's Groves, DeGale, Chavez Jr., Golovkin, and possibly Froch. So what's the best move for Ward, assuming he can get his promotional situation settled?

Ward can improve his resume by staying at 168 and beating all comers. Ward can try to achieve greatness by moving up in weight and cleaning out the next division.

Step up to LHW. Kovalev fight in 2015, that's what boxing fans want to see.

The only problem is, several top LHWs would not be available for him to fight.

It's a shame that this promotional bull**** ruins the chance to see some great matches. Ward vs Kovalev would be great though.

Stevenson wants to fight him at any weight. Ward needs to just accept the fights and stop bsing a way out of every difficult match up!

If Ward wants to be p4p1 there's no reason he can't do BOTH. The current #1 does it…

Go up to light heavy to challenge Stevenson/Kovalev/Hopkins. Drop down to 68 if a fight with Golovkin/Groves/Froch materializes.

for most fighters, a long lay-off this would mean an inevitable gain in weight resulting in a move up in weight class.... but ward's a gym rat and he looks in great shape... so he'll stay at 168

and wait for golovkin/chavez jnr vs. fighting a real threat in kovalev

Andre Ward is going to 175.

In an interview he said he had wanted to move up for some time now but hasn't because Hunter wanted him to stay at 168.
He said he doesn't have any problem making 168 easily but feels great at 175 also.

I expect that Ward's next fight weight is dependent on which best opponent he can get so I wouldn't be surprised if it is at 175.

The big fights for Ward are at 175... But I don't see him moving up as long as Stevenson and Kovalev are round, maybe if it was just Hopkins he'd move up....

The only guy for Ward at 168 would be Groves if he defeats Froch, and possibly Froch himself if they could arrange that fight. Other than that, I don't see anyone for Ward to fight, but of course he could stay and try to dominate his divisions for years, there's nothing wrong with that. If he moves up to LHW then Kovalev would likely be the first guy to fight. It would be a big fight for Ward and I believe that he would win in his style. As for Stevenson and Hopkins, if they really want to fight Ward, I'm sure that no TV problems could stop them and I don't believe in those excuses. I also think that Ward would beat them both comfortably, so it looks like the biggest problem right now is the one he has with his promoter.

    On the contrary!

With the timing and network politics the way it is wouldn't it be interesting if while Hopkins and Stevenson are waiting to get it on, Ward makes a fight with Kovalev?

This way when Ward schools Kovalev and takes his belt he can just wait around for BHOP-Stevenson and get a quick, clear path to LHW unification.
Ward could end up with all four belts by this time next year. :yep

Wouldn't that be his strongest negotiation position as the undisputed LHW champion when he moves to GBP/Haymon?

If Hopkins can't get his dream big money fight with mayweather, what would be the next best thing?

An mega-fight for LHW unification with Andre Ward!

Undisputed > anything else, so Ward has to do that first
