Maybe the surgery on the torn rotator cuff has given him more power now.

Maybe he broke his nose with his accuracy and Smith being a stationary punching bag. Good practice.

Still looked like he had a bit more power, though.

Ward has decent power and as you indicated is very accurate. But if he gets the stoppage against someone, it's almost always going to be from the accumulation of punches he lands, the exception being if that person has a weak chin.

Personally I think his power is the same, but Smith isn't really a good barometer for measuring it one way or the other. He was a punching bag to the degree that Ward could really pick his shots and sit down on them with no concern about anything coming back at him.

He does have power, but he doesn't have world level power.
In 6 years he had 10 fights and now 3 stoppages. 1 being the dried bones of Dawson, one being a glassy journeyman and now we got Smith who was already brutalized by 2 of his countrymen but went 12 with shot AA twice.

Now you can say he only had 2 opponents in that other 7 that he should have been able to take out. Namely Green and Miranda, but with them he had to tie them up constantly to avoid their own power, so that's somewhat understandable.

Long story short, he's anything but a puncher, but you can't keep taking shots from him either.

Ward has enough pop in his punches to keep opponents honest but he'll never be a KO specialist. Even when he was unloading on Smith I never felt that he could take out Smith cleanly, he was beating him up but Smith was being gradually worn down not being blown away by Ward's power.

I remember when Ward got all salty about people saying that Froch hits harder than him and has a better chin than he does. Er.. but that's just true lol. He said something along the lines that the only reason they say Froch's chin is better is because he gets hit a lot. :rofl :patsch

I seriously doubt Froch would throw his toys out of the pram if someone told him that they gave Ward the edge over him when it comes to boxing ability and speed.
