That's why this can't be compared to Lewis retiring. This would be a guy with plenty left in the tank punking out because he doesn't believe he won the first fight.
He also schooled Abraham when he was still a monster, plus big wins over Kovalev, Kessler & Dawson with good wins over Bika, Green, Barrera & Miranda. That's a pretty great resume for a fighter who has had such big stretches of inactivity in Ward.
Ward has proved folks wrong so many times so I doubt he retires before cashing in on one last big fight.
I think you've totally nailed it and after reading this I'm quite sure he'll retire,on the British commentary of the fight they said early on just before the knock down that Ward has lost a step, may not seem much against those tune ups but even half a step against the best is enough to struggle which is exactly what happened when he was countered. I think you're right about his lack of power esp at 175 he's gonna have to keep pulling it out of the fire and those physical bouts are gonna take their toll,if he rematches Kovalev and loses he'd have a hard time re building and he'd see it as a blot on his perfect record, actually I don't think the public see it that way,I don't mind seeing a few losses as appose to the Mayweather effect?
Ward said after convincingly defeating Kessler at the beginning of the Super Six that he wants to be completely done as a boxer by right at or around 30. He's 32 now & still undefeated, and has beat every big challenge in front of him, he wants to leave on his own terms while he still is relatively young, and can enjoy his money and family. Time to get that easy money being the next RJJ for HBO or Showtime
SOB is not undefeated, Kovalev beat the crap out of the chicken. Ward is a piece of fecal matter and should be flushed down the toilet and back into the sewer from which he came..................Ward has to have his personal referee, judges, boxing commission, they should have known that they would get cheated. Kovalev will send SOB back down into the sewer from which he came.................
In a perfect world, the perfect way to go out is to rematch kovalev and unify with stevenson in 2017. Retires as the Undisputed LHW champion
Yeah about that, I just checked Box Rec and as far as I can tell that was the first time Robert Byrd reffed a Ward fight, the first time Burt Clements, Glenn Trowbridge or John McKaie judged a Ward fight, and the first time Ward fought under that boxing commission (Nevada) while being Kovalev's 3rd so....Pretty monumental fail there man.
Good post, but the more I read this, the more I think he retires. I think the Kovalev fight might make Ward reckon that he is past his peak. Remember, this is a guy who has won every fight since he was 12 years old. He came in there full of confidence, but was clearly less confident before the decision. Despite what he's saying, he knows he was fortunate against Kovalev (even those who scored it for Ward usually admit it could have gone the other way) and he's not used to that. I think he might take it as a signal to pack it in while he's still on top. Before his decline makes him take a loss. We'll see though in due course ...
