It was the end of the rope for him mentally. No doubt about it. He fired his S&C coach who managed to get him in top form for the first fight because he was done giving his all. I think he was in really bad DUI crash or something too between fights. Kovalev was never an iron willed guy compared to other champions, but he was a helluva boxer. If he gets the decision he deserved over Ward you could argue he'd go to p4p #1. Instead, he went right off the rails and didn't make it back.

I honestly never thought Kovalev was as good as this forum thought he was. Even in the Eledier Alvarez rematch Kovalev didnt look the same as he once did. Kovalev was a fun fighter. But on Paper his best wins are Jean Pascal and Bhop.

So, having struggles with Kovalev the first fight and needing a second fight isn't that impressive from ward.

seeing kovalev need two fights to beat a Canadian level fighter in Eledier Alvarez I said Kovalev had no chance in winning.

He gets credit but the blatant corruption and home cooking involved in those two fights forever leaves an asterisk on those wins.

He put a stranglehold on the p4p #1 spot for the rest of his career after those fights, got into the HOF his first year of eligibility, and is rated one of the five best super middleweights of all time.

The only places those fights are ever talked about as "legacy tarnishing" are on message boards by anonymous posters where the topic floats around for a few days and then goes away in favor of another grievance against another boxer. It's literally never brought up on boxing shows, news articles, or magazines, even when the topic is controversial boxing fights.

Not sure Ward even knows these message boards exist.

He got plenty of credit. They even gave him the first fight, which he lost.
