It's Wards first fight back in quite some time and though I wish it were against someone a little better at least he's fighting right? Perbian has 3 losses, 1 win in a 6 round fight, and 1 draw in his last 5 fights. His only TKO loss came to Degale in round 3. Otherwise he has a Majority Decison loss to Sakio Bika and Unaminous Decision loss to JLeon Love. His 1 draw comes against Bdou Jack. Perbian with the exception of the 3rd round knockout is a sturdy fighter who has fought a lot of the guys trying to ascend to the top of the SMW division. While he hasn't come out on top of them my only guess is Wards team is trying to see where he stands with many of the upcoming SMWs. Anyway here's the article from the seen, According to Mexican promoter Osvaldo Kuchle of Promociones Del Pueblo, there are ongoing discussions to have his fighter, Marco Antonio Periban (21-3-1, 13KOs), take on WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (27-0, 14KOs), who returns on June 20th at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California Ward has been inactive since November 2013 when he won a twelve round decision over Edwin Rodriguez. Periban was knocked out by James DeGale in the third round of their IBF eliminator last November. He returned to the ring on March 14th in Mexico and won an easy six round decision over Octavio Castro. Ward has been looking to have a tuneup or two to shake off the ring rust. ***********.com reported last week that Ward's next fight could land on BET [Black Entertainment Television]. "Negotiations are currently at 70 percent. We expect to close in the next few days. They have another opponent, but we are confident that [Ward's team] will go with Periban, who is hungry and hopes to show the world his potential," said Kuchle to ESPN Deportes. Edit: If this fight becomes a done deal and anyone finds out how much Ward is getting paid please comment below!
meh i did not expect anything BIG considering its wards first fight back after a long layoff. he better fight someone good after tho
I'm giving him room also he has been inactive for some time but hopefully he faces someone at least in the top 15-20 next time out. I won't lie I thought it would at least be someone in the late 15-20 range for a tuneup this time out.
I would have preferred Paul Smith. That was one of the names I saw thrown around. He is coming off a couple title shots against Abraham where he did not look bad. Periban has a loss to J'Leon Love. I just don't see him as a great tune-up fight.
I don't think anyone will see it as a great tuneup but he has been in with a lot of the recent upcoming SMWs and Sakio Bika. Wards team might see this as a gauge for where Wards needs to be in later fights and a gauge to see where he is now. I would of preferred someone/anyone in the top 20.
On a sidnote, Andre Dirrell will be fighting James Degale, which is a fairly thrilling match up. Andre Ward, arguable the best SMW in the world, will be fighting the guy Degale KO'd. So now the Dirrell brothers fight better opposition than Ward :huh It would be interesting to hear what long term strategy Team Ward has, if there is any. Will Ward wipe out the best fighters at SMW, such as Andre and Anthony Dirrell, and George Groves? Is there any high profile fighter at all he'd consider aiming for?
Froch said Ward doesn't even know himself if he can still make 168... So then he would have to move to 175. But... But... Stevenson, Kovalev and Beterbiev are there. So, Houston, we have a problem.
I would have preferred he face Froch but I can understand the need for a warm up. But I just hope he is more active. Even when he was active he was only fighting twice per year which would mean we would only see him fight one more time this year after this warm up. He's lost so much time with his extended holiday, injuries and legal issues he needs to be more active if he is to rebuild the momentum he has lost. We can now pretty much forget a Froch fight as Froch will likely face Chavez Jr in the summer and then be retired by the time Ward is ready to fight again.
You more than most should know WHY Froch fought Mack. Had only to do with Lucian Bute backing out of the December Montreal rematch for his own tuneup. Froch had to fight someone in Bute's place, Mack stepped in. :think
