One of the worst fights for a top notch P4P-caliber fighter to take in recent years (especially when you factor his inactivity). This is like Wladimir vs. Mormeck.
i forgot why but i never complained about that fight even though Mack had not fought at 168 in years and never would again. Its better for a fighter to stay active than wait for better opposition. Right now no one of any value is really available for Ward so why not take that tune-up?
What did you guys expect? The writing was on the wall considering the layoff and the network airing his comeback. In fact: They could have chosen someone much worse than Periban.
The problem is with Froch the tune up was the exception to the rule, with Ward we do not know if the tune up is an indication of his future habits or just a tune up. Looking back on Wards career it is easy to see why people are confused and unsure. He was only fighter in the S6 to not have to leave his home country, he has avoided ALL competitive or perceived competitive fights since then (Dawson is the exception but again this has a story to it as Dawson was not at his natural weight). In his defense you can argue his team negotiated well for S6 and the injury and legal problems have complecated things since but when you dig into these issues even these become murky as we find rumors of his ego and feelings of entitlement led to fights not happening which then helped start or make worse the legal problems. There is one thing for sure with Ward, you CANNOT say this all part of a natural process and he be fighting top fighters in no time because the evidence just does not support that theory
On one hand I'm happy to just see him enter the ring again and shake things up at the watered down SMW division, but he shouldn't be able to keep his WBA "Super" Super Middleweight belt after all this time and fighting a guy who is 1-1-3 in his last 5 fights, with the only win coming against a 50/50 record journeyman. If he want to rebuild, then rebuild... but don't do it while holding a belt hostage.
After a 2 year retirement, designed to avoid a rematch with DLH, let's get it right. Also you have to bear in mind the weight he fought Marquez at, it was tough for JMM. That's not to say I'm defending Ward here, he has become a laughing stock to anyone with even a surface knowledge of boxing. Periban is a joke opponent, absolutely worthless.
