It amazes me how Ward, who brags less and talks less crap about opponents than 95% of world champions, gets called arrogant and a POS.

 

His faux Christian demeanor and polar opposite conduct may contribute to that.

 

How is it "faux"? He barely talks about it anyway. What exactly about his conduct is so terrible?

He never promises a knockout or that he's going to "hurt" his opponent, unlike plenty of fighters. He never insults a fighter's personal life, unlike plenty of fighters. He never initiates trash talk or bullying body language at weigh-ins, unlike plenty of fighters. He never fails to give credit to his opponent's career. He never flaunts his wealth. He never claims to be better than past greats. He always includes caveats and acknowledges competing viewpoints when expressing an opinion. He even acknowledges his fight with Kovalev was close and he won't argue with people who call it either way. Ward is classier than your average champion.

sad thing is i don't see this pathetic situation ending anytime soon--it's embedded in our culture.

I can't prove it my guess is that the category of American fans that contribute most to total fight revenue is the same group that supports this behaviour. These folks are cheering contestants in a reality show--the actual fight inside the ring is just one part, and astonishingly not even the biggest part--of a larger gossipy side-show-like contest that began with contract negotiation

to this lot, the sport of boxing is completely secondary and fair play is for naive chumps; if you insist on a level playing field, well you must be a loser--as you said, not an ounce of respect for boxing

 

Yeah, Ward is not in touch with god like this guy is. God talks to him about boxing all the time. Too bad God can't give him any advice on accounting.
