As we found out in the Andre Dirrell-Carl Froch bout, the current crop of American super-middleweight contenders likes to hold their opponents. A lot. Why throw and dodge punches when you can, like Dirrell, simply run away? Or, like Ward, heabutt and cut your opposition into submission?

The Americans have talent. But until this junk stops, American fighters are not going to get the respect they deserve.

Dirrell suffered the fate he deserved and lost his bout with Froch. Ward, however, was rewarded for his headbutting and excessive clinching and that is not something which the sport should permit.

Tonight could have been the Andre Ward Coming Out Party. Instead it turned into the "This Ref Sucks and Andre Ward Is a Dirty Mo Fo" event.

That's a shame, and it hurts the sport and its legitimacy. Very unsatisfying fight and the second fight of the tournament so far to leave a bad taste in fans' mouths.

Showtime and those involved in the tournament have to get better refs and make sure this kind of thing does not happen in the future, no matter where the bout is fought. Only Abraham-Taylor had a clean ending and after three fights, that's not good enough.

Not the same. Dirrell holds at Ruiz like levels but he's not damaging his opponent with that. Ward is just straight up dirty.

Bullsh*t. Dirrell runs like an amateur, Ward fights like a pro.

Kessler hung on for dear life as often as Ward initiated clinches. The butts were unfortunate, but also a product of Kessler's robotic upper body movement.

I'm actually a little wary now, of how the Ward-Dirrell bout will go.

I watched both fights and I have to agree. I didn't think Dirrell deserved to win that fight but at the same time, neither should Carl Froch. Draw if anything. I will admit that the punch and hold is the kind of fight I like to watch.

As for tonight, Ward did initiate almost all the clinches along with the head-butts. The ref should warned Ward of a point deduction and no one was given. Not much of a warning for head-butts either. It was frustrating because it was obvious that Ward could have won without all the junk thrown in.

    "Stop holding him Mikkel". :rofl

It depends on how much Ward is allowed to get away with. If Dirrell learns from the Froch debacle and Ward isn't allowed to lead with his head as he was hear, he'll have a decent shot.

BUT...the fight's in Oakland. First thing I do if I'm Dirrell is make sure the Kessler-Ward ref is banned from working my fight. That's #1.

The difference is that Ward demonstrated dominance over Kessler without question far more then Dirrell did over Froch.

Ward had the talent -- but not so much gas, it seemed -- to win this fight. That's what makes this so frustrating. Instead of a great boxer's coming out party, it's an MMA-wannabe, mini-Evander Holyfield farce. Seriously unsatisfying for fans. And unfair to Kessler.

Froch was dirty as hell. So he can be added to the list. But Froch only became dirty after Dirrell ran for the first half of the fight.

Froch wanted to fight. Dirrell wanted to spoil. Dirrell initiated the "spoling," just as Ward initiated the clinching and headbutting.
