Only the hardcore boxing purists who can be patient enough to ignore and stomach the smothering, holding, wrestling and fouling just so they can witness the odd moment of brilliance would pay to watch Ward.

That style as has no appeal to the casuals and for once I sympathise with them.

Exactly. There's even video of Golovkin's camp saying 164 or their focus is middleweight. Not that I think either guy ducked but come on... Ward will be hated regardless. He was hated before the kovalev fight and he's hated after.

 

To be fair Ward was mostly just annoying before the SK fight. I mean, he had the skills, but fought once every 2 years and his style is pretty boring. But OK, whatever. He fought a great fight against Kovalev, but it was a losing fight. So he got the decision - well, not his 'fault', he came to try to win, they gave him the win, so OK.

Where he does p*ss me off, however, is for the fact that he signed a rematch, knows that his win is a bit iffy, and is still acting like a big baby about it. That is what generates hate.

 

That's good boxing business 101.
The more you hate him the more likely you are to buy the PPV and to whine to your friends so that they do too.
It always worked like a charm for Mayweather.
