The only thing I'm annoyed about with the Ward retirement, is that he is close with Hearn/Sky and I've got a baaaaaaad felin that he's moving over to the UK to commentate on some of the fights over here. Paulie's a breath of fresh air, listening to Ward will destroy what Hearn has built. Don't ****ing do it. We deserve better.
You're probably right. I don't know who else would've had enough financial backing for it to have been a "big money" offer. On that note, I don't think it's a coincidence that he announced it so quickly after the Canelo-GGG draw. I've maintained for awhile that the end-game for each was Golovkin-Ward on PPV after GGG beat Canelo & Saunders. Now, that timeline's moved back for who knows how long (especially if GGG lands a Cotto fight in December). That's a lot of what-ifs & waiting. Plus, after getting two Canelo paydays ( & potentially a Cotto one) and the wear associated with that, there's always the chance GGG would just retire himself. Now...If the "best case scenario" happens in a reasonable time frame & GGG still wants the fight? My guess is Andre would unretire in 5 seconds for that one. He just doesn't want to take on one or two of the LHW young guns in low-reward, high risk fights in the meantime when there's no guarantee the cash-out fight will even come off. Better to just wait & see how it all plays out.
Not surprised at all. He would have retired prior to the second fight with Kovalev as he was suggesting, people really weren't taking those talks seriously it was thought to be an attempt to attain more leverage in negotiations. Now we all see he was indeed serious. Great ending to a decorated career.
He's ducking GGG he knew that he waa planning on skipping 168 and coming straight for Ward's ass. Bivol, Pimp, Gvozdyk, Beterbiev, and Jack were waiting to get in that ass too. Oh yeah Kovalev was gonna wax him in a third fight.
Good for him. He can retire with his mind intact and his body only partially broken. Most guys can't. ..and he made good money.. and he has a career in broadcasting he can get into.. or promoting. He doesn't need to fight. He made good points, people just think of the damage in the ring, but training camps aren't good for your body either.
Yes, fair point. The thing is that GGG-Ward in the near future required GGG to win by brutal destruction such that Canelo did not want the rematch for a while, plus Saunders/Cotto not wanting the fight or pricing themselves out. Too bad it didn't happen, I'd still like to see GGG-Ward. Obviously Ward is a big favourite, but stranger things have happened, especially if Ward is far from 100% physically.
Crazier matchups tend to happen more frequently at the end of the rope when there's really not a whole lot to lose legacy-wise and fighters want the $$$. I'm not expecting it, but that's probably the only fight I'd figure Andre would come back for. FWIW, I'd favor Andre, too. Spoilers are the worst matchup for GGG, and a spoiler with a size advantage is especially nasty.
Retiring on top, with his finances and his brain intact. Wish more would do the same. Well deserved. Happy retirement Champ!
Great fighter, best of HIS generation. Not quite as good as the best guy from the previous generation. #1 or #2 SMW ever.
HOF? No he isn't. That's a decision for years in the future. Why are you giving him a label that he hasn't procured yet? As for daddies & fishing... Ward Sr certainly was good at putting his pole in the black sea & coming out with Brown trout! I love all the brothers claiming Ward acting like he wasn't spawned by Bono from U2!
