HBO's not going to keep him around if he's not a relevant boxer anymore. This guy's always come across so self-entitled. Wanted all the S6 fights at home, wanted the LHW champ to come down to his weight, wanted a shot Pavlik, then Chavez, now MW Golovkin, when he has three potential super fights with Pascal, Stevenson, and Kovalev just waiting with no other options at 168. And turns on his promoter who made all that happen for him because he think he deserves more fame and money despite his style of fighting.
James Prince probably has something to do with Ward turning on Goossen. I also think he genuinely believes his style of fighting is hot ****. He always downplays the aggressive fighter's gameplan when he calls fights. Good point, but I don't think he sees them as "threats" since he hasn't moved up. By always saying "if you ask Golovkin's people, they don't want the fight", he projects his own situation of having no interest in going up to LHW... even then, he's cleaned up SMW. Golovkin hasn't even cleaned up MW yet. Andre Ward should pull a John Spartan / Demolition Man and get put down in a freezer for a couple of years. Maybe his passion for fighting will reignite when he wakes up.
1. TR probably isn't ready for yet another setback in Chavez Jr's progression, hurts the wallet. In terms of big fights, I bet TR would like Froch (already made an offer), Golovkin (common opponent: Lee) and Ward in that order of preference. 2. I can't see HBO being ok with Junior going from Vera to Ward. Lacks a lot of credibility. Junior would need to beat a real SMW first. This ain't Cotto-Martinez, Junior and Ward aren't on their way out nor are they desperate for retirement money.
He may also need to consider a new manager seriously what is James Prince doing wtih him? he needs either Top Rank & Cameron Dunkin or Goldenboy & Al Haymon
well one thing I can say is that :hammertime his broadcasting is way more entertaining than his actual fights..
Yeah if Ward wants to continue putting food on the table he will have to continue boxing. Commentating isn't a permanent job and Ward knows better. But at the same time the politics does suck. Ward should fight who he wants to fight, it seems like someone is always on his ear, even his trainer.
For those who think Goossen's done a bad job with him, would you care to elaborate? I'm not neck deep in the situation, but at first glance, I see a promoter who's gotten Ward very good paydays for his ratings, exposure, refs that let him fight how he pleases, and has been able to keep him at home for most of his fights (including being the only fighter to have all his 1st round Super Six fights at home). Ward doesn't change weights; his opponents do. I'm not set in stone on my opinion, though- sell me on how Goossen's done a bad job promoting Ward, and I'll be happy to hear it. :good
I love seeing Ward on HBO... in the announcers seat. IMO he is the best commentator by far. He is articulate, accurate, knows wtf he is talking about. Paulie is number 2 for me. The rest are just ok, but I wouldnt miss them. (Al, Max, Lampley, etc)
The only negative thing I read about Dan is that he was too lazy to attend some meetings over at HBO to discuss potential fights for Ward. Always disagrees with Prince on opponent selection. Other than that... fvck me, 2M to fight Rodriguez on a 1-fight broadcast in Cali is pretty damn good. :conf
Those things you mention (other than payday/ratings ratio) can be seen as liabilities as much as boons. Did Goossen organize the super six? Because outside of the tourney, and getting Dawson at 168 Ward does not have a ton going for him. The way I see it, Ward/Goossen was gifted with that tourney (from a business perspective, not gifted with the wins in tourney) and Ward has his p4p status and lineal because he got the "opportunity" to actually face his division. Which was not something Goossen did for him to the best of my knowledge, that was almost all SHO. All Goossen has done outside signing onto tourney and landing Dawson, is keep Ward inactive , holding out for unreasonable home turf demands no other top name will agree to, and shutting Ward and his trusted management team out of negotiations with opponents and the networks.
Thanks for the feedback, gentlemen. Wanted to dig a little deeper before I jumped to any conclusions to hear both sides of the story. :thumbsup
We all know that Ward would put a clinic on Stevenson and Kovalev simply a no brainer. I totally understand where he is coming from, p4p skillwise I can not split him for the number one spot between him and rigondeaux. Floyds number two but would drop to third spot after either rigo or ward. Reason I have them so high. Is the the subtle moves that casual fans don't see
