Mclelland is the most overrated fighter I know. His management quickly learned (after him losing to mediocre fighters) that he was entertaining but crude and would loose to most decent boxers.... so they put him carefully in the ring with other crude fighters like himself. The result was entertaining. He excited a lot of people who saw him as a beast. Then after padding his record with fight after fight his management wanted to cash out (and they perhaps started to believe their own spin a bit too) and sent him in the ring with a good fighter. _____________ This story so far was exactly the same for Mclellan and for Jeff Lacy. The difference is that Lacy had not lost to mediocre people at this point. The next difference is that McLellan's promoter was lucky that the champion at the time was rather crude himself (but very very strong), so Mclellan might even have a chance despite his record being virtually fake just like Lacy's. The champ that Lacy met was Calzaghe who was not crude, but fast and good... Mclellan actually was a bit successful at times because Benn himself liked a good battle... but in the end Mclellan was KTFO! and Lacy was beaten up. Both exposed. However, Mclellan never fought again, so the myth could live on among some fans because they never really got to see him lose fight after fight once he got exposed and had to fight real fights. Lacy kept fighting and every time he lost more and more fans realized the reality.
