I think Hopkins is a little bit better, but he was never at his prime at 168 or 175. I think Ward gets the split decision in an ugly fight.
I believe that, in general, I tend to overrate Ward and underrate Hopkins. With that in mind, even though my gut reaction was Ward I am going to go with B-Hop by decision.
Genuinely cant call this one. Id have to go back and rewatch some prime Hopkins. I think its easy to forget the true form of fighters that stay in the sport too long and we get used to their faded versions. But a prime hopkins vs a prime ward, think I lean towards Hopkins... while their skills may he on par with eachother, he has the edge in chin, power and is ever so slightly quicker imo. I give a slight IQ edge to Ward believe it or not, but not sure its enough here to matter. Close close fight would be fascinating to see.
They would octopus grab and foul each other to death whilst whining to the ref about the other being dirty.
I voted Hopkins on the belief that he does everything just a little better but I have read some interesting pro Ward arguments How do you guys think Ward does vs the Roy Jones that Hopkins fought the first time
People aren't fair. Ward retired at 33 and people are comparing him to an old Hopkins. Try the Glen Johnson version of Hopkins and Bernard wins that for sure!
Ward is a naturally bigger and stronger man who knows just as many dirty tricks. And he is faster. The fight would be an interesting display of tactical skills with the chace of a car crash when the man behind on points fouls.
Hopkins edges it for me. He was better defensively, a better counter puncher and had better movement. I also think BHop was also smarter, his ring IQ was what allowed him to be still world class well into his 40's. People say Ward wins because of his athleticism and speed but BHop beat plenty of guys with faster hands and who were more athletic. That's what made BHop special he could usually take away fighters physical advantages. BHop struggled with guys who could beat him to the punch and then be gone, which I think Ward would struggle to do consistently as he had a much shorter reach than BHop unlike RJJ, Taylor and Dawson. I think BHop can keep this fight on the outside where he has the edge, he can make Ward miss more than Ward will make him miss and counter him when he does. Hopkins wins a competitive decision, something like 7-5 in rounds. Also Hopkins clearly ranks higher as an ATG, it's not even close, Hopkins took risks and cemented his greatness, it's hard to favour Ward considering he did so little with his gifts in comparison to Hopkins.
