Fair enough. I think Ward would easily handle Canelo ala Bivol and Beterbiev has never fought anyone close to Ward's level, either.
He also fought two of the top 5 most murderous punchers in the sport in the space of three fights. Many fighters navigated their way through their entire careers never having fought one puncher like that, let alone two. Wins his title from savage punching KO artist Adonis and then just 10 months later after his first defence he jumps straight into a unification match up against the equally murderous punching Beterbiev. And not even for a purse befitting of their talents or a unification match up. To add some perspective. Haney earned $3 mill for fighting a shot old inactive Linares. This content is protected
Here's a bonus: This content is protected Stevenson had good timing and very heavy hands if nothing else and Gzodzyk took the power well. The Nail's straight snappy punches and high workrate are a problem for anybody including Ward
Yes he's a really talented fighter. Said he wasn't ready enough physically for the Beterbiev fight and that was in evidence in the gym during preparation for the fight. He's a refreshingly and very honest chap so I give that more credence coming from someone like him Timestamped This content is protected
He should have known what Beterbiev is capable of especially after suffering a defeat against him ten years earlier as an amateur.
I know he did. But like I said, he's one of the most honest boxers out there and if he says there was, for whatever reason, a problem in camp with his physical condition I give it more credence than I would others.
I do agree, I did watch an interview with him in Israel and he is a straight shooter. Beterbiev wanted a brawl and Gvozdyk in one too many instances was willing to mix it up with him.
Yeah, I'm not saying he would've won or even that I 100% believe it's true - Beterbiev is a legit monster - but he's very candid and he has a surprisingly small ego for a professional fighter and he has no problem admitting things most other fighters wouldn't even contemplate doing. Yes, he should've boxed and moved more than he did for sure. Trading with Beterbiev, even in spells, is a suicidal tactic because he's not the one who is going to be bloodied and battered and blowing out of his ass in the back half of the fight.
Ward's prime at 168 lb was pretty good. In a p4p sense, prime Ward can compete with anyone listed on the thread (Beterbiev is a bad stylistic matchup but the other two are winnable for a prime Ward). But he retired for a reason, he wasn't as good at 175 lb (just watch some footage if you don't believe me). He should have lost the first Kovalev fight, and would have lost even more clearly if Kovalev hadn't already started fading / going off the rails. If he didn't retire, it was therefore a faded Ward against a prime Bivol / Beterbiev / Gvozdyk. Very little chance at all against Beterbiev. He would likely lose vs Bivol just due to the difference in speed / footwork (watch 1 round of Bivol vs Canelo and 1 round of Ward vs Kovalev immediately afterwards, and you'll see what I mean). Gvozdyk has the tools to beat a faded Ward too, but I don't know; I have a sneaky feeling that Ward's inside game and dirty tactics might have controversially squeaked him past Gvozdyk.
I think he'd have a hard time with Beterbiev stylistically. His grappling/rough game on the inside won't work against him. I think he beats Gvodzyk and Bivol.
