Ward was a great ameutuer and undefeated world champ who is about to win the super six tournament. Eubank was a great fighter in his day. I will say a toss up.
Yey i know different eras,,,THe point i was trying to make was that EUbank was never considered one of the elite fighters even inhis prime, and that lot of people here are overrating Eubank....Very good fighter with solid resume...BUt all this talk about him being in another league,, Is either nostaligia,Dont know boxing and just guessing, orbeing a typical Brit and overrating ur guys again. And being american has nothing to so with why he is on pfp list...It is what it is , he is one of the best young talents in the game, about to win the super 6 .. Beat Kessler more convincingly than Calzaghe, who also happened ot beat Froch. Wards only non impressive fight was with the tough Bika,, He has dominated everyone else... WHat are you gonna say after he beats Froch>
Eubank never really impressed me to be honest . I believe Ward would have too much skill for Eubank to overcome . Ward outpoints him .
Yes i do agree that if Wards career ended right now... His resume isnt as good as Eubanks.(yet) BUt the thread was who would win in a hth matchup and so far i would lean towards Ward.. Although its a close matchup... Eubank didn have some big wins, i guess its his close fights with a couple unheralded challengers that he should have kod or dominated.... Dont see Ward fighting even with Ray Close or struggling with Schommer,Cherry and Costa... The true elite SMW around that time RJ or PRime James TOney would easily dominate those guys... Eubank beat some pretty good Euros back then Benn,Watson,Rocchingiani and a washed up American Holmes...But i its too bad Eubank didnt fight the top dogs at the time or other real good guys like Reggie Johson,Nunn Liles,Mccallum the time.. He beat a couple Americans that were solid contenders(thorton,Esset, (and an old LIndell Holmes).. But i feel that to prove your an ATg or top dog in your diviision, sometimes you have to chase or go out of your way to prove your greatnes... very good figter , But not geat and probably just a litlle short of hof status.. At least not anytime soon.
He clearly had elite talent. The reason he didn't crack the fun, end-of-year 'lb4lb' list is because he did nothing to warrant it - he was only ever doing just enough to win. He'd win six rounds (in his mind) then run and have close, controversial fights against vastly inferior talents. Plus The Ring panel wouldn't have seen much of his fights anyway, even if he did decide to dominate more and force stoppages.
Eubank at his sharpest beats any of these guys like Lacy, Ward, Pascal, Taylor, Dirrell and Green all day long if he chose to. They're just athletes. They have no jab, no rythm and no balance. They're just athletic. Poor fundamentals and poor experience. In the 80s there was a seemingly never-ending conveyor belt of middleweights being churned out of gyms on every street corner, properly trained by old-school teachers and having sparring wars with dozens of different fighters a week and amateur fights that were like professional fights (pre-computer scoring, 3-min rounds). It was a different era back then. No non-London Europeans to speak of, and none of this sports science obsession. Just proper old school boxing. To see Eubank at his sharpest you need to see him forced to be at his sharpest, presented with a challenge. The first Benn fight, first Watson fight and the challengers who were genuine threats if he didn't pick up an early lead (Thornton fight, Rocchigiani fight, Wharton fight). A sharp short right, very tight combinations, excellent defensive reflexes, etc. Ward jumping in head-first, despite being quite fast, would get picked off.
If Eubank outclasses Ward, and Ward outclasses Kessler, does that mean Eubank is about two classes higher than Kessler? Answer me Brittard. :good
I know we like the olden day fighters... but honestly Ward would win a UD12. The current genration of supermiddleweights has never been deeper. Traditionally only england cared about the division and it was sort of a national UK thing. Today it is one of the very strongest and international divisions in boxing. I would expect the current top 4 to all beat Eubank. That includes at least Ward, Kessler, and Froch. Bute and Dirrell may also. The only olden-days fighter to really pose very serious problem for all the current top fighters is Calzaghe. And he of course isnt very olden-days.
Ward isnt even at his prime yet so its hard to judge. Just kiddin Eubank would beat this **** out of him, this Super Middle weight era isnt **** on the Eubank era.
And the plodding limited Froch who walks in with long slow leads (from the arm or shoulder) against the quick hands, quick feet, quick reflexes and lateral movement of counter-punching Eubank?
