This thread shows the lack of knowledge of many peopel in here. The supermiddle weight division is a VERY young division, and in the days of Eubank most Americans and boxers from most other countries simply skipped the division all together or at least didnt care about it at all. Therefore it was a purely UK thing. Eubank, Benn, Collins, Starie etc etc.. they were all british and controlled the division because boxers from other countries didnt care about it. Not until Calzaghe-Kessler did the division get the spark that gave it international appeal. Before that it had been a UK thing with the exception of German Ottke picking up a cheap belt in a very weak division and just sitting on it against the poor poor level of opposition there was. With Kessler-Calzaghe the division exploded and is now very prestigious and crowded with talent.
People like Roy Jones, Bernie Hopkins and James Toney where around at the time Eubank, Ben and Collins where. They where the big fights so they didnt need any of our british boys. Its not our fault we where avoided :deal
It became very popular in the States when Hearns and Leonard held belts there and most of the vast depth of talented middles were able to have an extra eight pounds (like, LINDELL HOLMES, MICHAEL NUNN, IRAN BARKLEY, JAMES TONEY, ROY JONES JR, GERALD MCCLELLAN, Tony Thornton, Ronnie Essett, Tim Littles, Frankie Liles, Merqui Sosa, Don Lee, etc etc), I can't think of any talented American who jumped it - not one. You had the appeal of Eubank and Benn there, big money fights with big attention in London, potentially.
In fact, Reggie Johnson jumped it on his record but wanted to move up and fight Eubank or Benn, he was part of the proposed King super-middle tournament involving Nunn, Norris, McClellan, Eubank, Benn, J Jackson and Sosa.
Ward UD, not a big fan of Ward and I like Eubank a lot more but as much as I like the cat, he was over rated then and is extremely over rated on this forum now. Ward is so young which at first made me scoff a bit at being included in the same thread as someone with sooo much experience and love. After thinkin about it for a bit, I can't see what Eubank would do to beat him.
Lets start by agreeing that Eubank was far the better boxer in terms of defence and counter punching. He could trade too. Also he had a solid chin and a solid punch to match so I think theres a **** load that he could do to beat Ward. I happen to think the reverse. I cant see what Ward would do to beat Eubank :thumbsup
