Ward can't lose a fight in his home town. Ward beat Kessler with headbutts, elbows, low blows, etc., and he had his referee to help him out. Ward beat Kessler with a billy goat run from way across the ring stopping Kessler by intentional illegal head butt. He had his referee there so he can get by with anything. The rules do not matter in Ward's home town..........
Have only seen Rodriguez in the Rosinsky fight and while strong and durable, he seemed levels removed from Andre. Unless he has improved a great deal since then, his only hope, imo, is that Ward is diminished and rusty from his surgery and the long layoff. I'll take Ward by wide UD or even late stoppage.
It is Wards fight for the taking, but La Bomba is probably about the best 168 prospect right now, and shouldn't be taken too lightly by 'Dre, specially after the lay-off. Ward appears confident he's in top shape, and if so, should have little problem neutralising La Bomba, but Rodriguez has shown that he's capable of the upset (well, OK, of upsetting Grachev) and is going in hungry and motivated. I see the Ward UD, though I ain't sure of the quality of Rodriguez' whiskers, so a TKO is not outta the question if SOG decides to go for it. Barring another Froch, Kessler or Bika fight, I think La Bomba's about as good as it gets for Ward at 168, but I'm more intrested in where he goes next.
That was probably the worst night of Rodriguez's career, not exemplary of him before or especially since. I actually thought Rosinsky got robbed. It was dreadful stuff from Rodriguez - defensively ******ed, couldn't string together more than one clean punch without swatting at the air, throwing mostly powerful slaps and backhands marching in with no game plan... He basically embodied ineffective aggression that night. Before that he always looked in control and dangerous even on the rare occasion he didn't get a stoppage. (he was 19-0 with 14 knockouts heading in, and the decisions came against notorious tough cookies- the likes of Aaron Pryor Jr., Darnell Boone and Marcus Upshaw). He most certainly has improved since, particularly as concerns his defense and use of the jab. Not enough for me to say that Ward by UD isn't the most likely scenario here, but enough to say he could make it tricky for Ward. Maybe his trickiest battle since Bika.
Wouldn't surprise me if Rodriguez managed to tag and shake Ward at some point, but I'm not certain if his finishing skills are developed sufficiently to deliver the coup de gras against SOG should that occur. Ward to win a somewhat more eventful than expected UD.
:nod Exactly what I'm expecting. Sort of a wake-up call for Ward after being able to coast in his last few. It could actually benefit him, in terms of financial opportunities, in that other top super middles will see Rodriguez have moments of success or even buzz him and think "Hey, maybe getting my passport stamped at OAK for a chance to nab the world title isn't such a bad idea...maybe I could do this... :think"
Rodriguez is pretty solid and Ward is coming off of a lay off and injuries so Rogriguez is catching Ward at a good time and should be somewhat competitive for most of thie fight. Ward is still a level or two above Rodriguez and wins a comfortable decision.
edwin rodriguez has never impressed me, whereas andre ward is a p4p level fighter. andre ward shakes off the rust and wins a commanding ud.
Ward wins this fight by UD/MD but I'm not so sure how good he will look in this fight. I think Rodriguez is serious business. At this moment I think Froch beats this 'rusty' version of Ward.
I mean, i'm not really one to get down on fighters to a disrespectful level, but who is denis grachev but some face first pressure fighter with one semi notable win? I mean, he pushed lucian bute, but is lucian ruined? george? I saw that domination coming. to me, he never looked like he would be able to hang with the elite. i'd be more impressed with rodriguez beating today's jermain taylor than donovan george.
