I'm beginning to wonder how good Andre Ward actually is. There is no doubt he is phenomenal but is he amongst the best of all time? James Toney IMO was one of the better middleweights/super middleweights when at his best. How do you think Andre Ward of modern day would match up with a prime James Toney in a super middleweight bout.

Toney knocks him out within 3 rounds or 4.

Motivated James Toney beats him easily. The bad version is a toss up.

The best version of Toney was possibly at 168 he would have brutalized Ward

Toney is just too good for Ward. His slick defense at the lower weights (160-175) was was one of the best in the past few decades along with FMJ, Whitaker.

I'm more inclined to favor Toney heavily, as Ward won't even go up from 168 to 175 unless a catch weight ,were as JT went from MW to HW. Nor will Ward risk it all in a real prime location such as Vegas. This leads me to ultimately doubt his abilities and his own confidence in them.

Toney while not perfect is still a cut above Andre Ward. Balls, Slickness, HoF opposition, Brash Behavior, Slurred Speech from decades in the game tip the scale in favor of "Lights Out".

Ward is getting underrated here,,... Ward can perform much better than Montell Griffin..

This is true but if you ask me Toney was robbed badly in both fights vs Griffin.

Still, Griffin made a good acount for himself,,... Ward may not be Roy Jones Jr. but he sure has the talent to beat a prime Toney..

Competetive fight, I dont count Ward out at all. Hes smart enough to fight in the manner that causes Toney the most problems, and has the ability to pull it off.

Hard to say. Ward hasn't fought anyone as good as Toney or with such a slick style. Not sure how he would deal with the shoulder roll and Toney's right hand counter.

Both excel on the inside though in different ways. Ward's style in close relies on him being very rough, controlling his opponent physically, not sure if he could do that with Toney.

Ward is better from the outside, better footwork and agility, he'd have the most success if he forced Toney to chase him.

It would be competitive but the best version of Toney wins a close decision.

Agreed, Toney would prevail by close decision. That is because Toney was best at super middleweight.

Toney at his best could have beaten any 168lb who ever fought including RJJ . . . yeah I said it! (its the newest division in boxing).
