Do not know about beating Jones. With an in shape Toney, the fight would have been more competitive but still Jones would have won a decision.Toney would have been dangerous though to the last round.
I remember seeing a video where Roach said Toney was the most naturally gifted fighter he ever trained. Good fight.
What a display of inside fighting that would be! Ward is better from the outside however. Great fight. Toss up for me.
I'd feel pretty confident in picking toney but let's remember ward would remind us all that if toney wouldn't fight in wards backyard then he would be admitting to not being world class and the fight wouldn't happen
Prime James Toney wins this by TKO by round 10. Today's boxers, even the elite ones like Ward are a level below that of the past era boxers like Toney, Jones, Hopkins. This is why Hopkins can still compete and win against this era's best at 50 years old.
Wow......a mythical matchup where I'd have to favor the racist nostalgia fighter over the modern more gifted fighter. Toney, mid rounds KO.:think
Shumenov was the reigning and defending LHW champion. :yep Murat was the IBF LHW mandatory. I thought everyone knoew that. atsch Cloud was the defending LHW champion. Pre-fight, Everyone had Cloud beating Hopkins. Today, Stevenson is the reigning LHW champion with basically the same skill level of Cloud. Today, Kovalev is a reigning LHW champion with basically the same skill level as Shumenov. What point were you attempting to make again? :huh
And even faster than Nunn. Nunn had much more power in his shots than Ward does. He also was a much better boxer than Ward with better footwork, punch combination, hand speed and movement. Actually, a better thread would have been; Andre Ward Vs Michael Nunn which Nunn would ultimately win by TKO.
Agree. Nunn had plenty of game himself and Toney eventually found him. Toney had explosive power at the lower weight classes. Never mind Ward couldn't do anything to hurt Toney, I can't even remember Toney being visibly shaken in a fight until he was in with Sam Peter at heavyweight.
Glass Jaw? :rofl:rofl That was a hell of a hook Toney hit him with. I think if Ward gets hit cleanly with the same hook, he'd be dropped also. Prime James Toney was a hell of a puncher. The kind that Ward has never been in the ring with.
