Like Andre Ward, then. Ward ducked Andre Dirrell, Lucian Bute and Adonis Stevenson. His legacy is completly built up by Euros who fight with their feets in the mud: Mikkel Kessler, Carl Froch and Arthur Abraham. Ward is now fighting someone who ain't in the top 20 At least Joe Calzaghes (46-0) mandatories were top ranked. I don't rule out Wards chances against Calzaghe, but I'd need to see how he does against some more styles. Hopefully he makes a meaningfull fight next, or at least faces someone who is ranked.
Dirrel ducked Ward when he was supposed to fight him in the Super 6. Bute didn't even want to enter the Super 6 and was shown by Froch who got schooled by Ward to not even be at world class level. I don't know who Adonis was before 2013 when Ward became frustratingly inactive. Also at the time Adonis was already at LHW. He's fighting Paul Smith or Pariban because he needs rounds under his belt for being out for nearly 2 years.
It was a mutual duck. Neither camp made any preparations for the schedueled fight, like training or booking a venue. When Showtimes management realised something was up, they had a lawyer sending letters to both Ward and Dirrell, and that's when Dirrell pulled out. Ward had previolusly stated that the winner of S6 should fight Bute, and when he had won, Bute said he was ready and offered to fight Ward outside Canada. This was the biggest fight that could be made at SMW at the time, since Ward had wiped out all other top opponents, and it was also a unification fight. But Ward flat out refused and made excuses. Bute then moved on to fight Froch, who crushed him. In normal cases, the champ (Ward) fights the top challenger (Bute) himself, he doesn't delegate it to one of his leftovers (Froch). Compare with Muhammed Ali. Did he fight Joe Frazier himself, or did he throw his leftovers after him? Stevenson has offered Ward a two fight-deal. One in Oakland at SMW and one in Stevesons backyard at LHW. Ward flat out refused and made excuses. He's making a defence against someone who isn't even within the top 20's atsch Doubt Calzaghe ever did that
Wards next opponent comes straight from a KO'loss against James Degale. The bums Calzaghe fought at least had defeated some other bum to earn a shot. But if Ward makes a meaningfull fight next, I might reconsider. He should fight one of the Dirrell brothers. (I forgot to mention that he actually ducked Anthony Dirrell as well, that's why he dropped one of his straps.)
Perbian is 1-3-1in his last 5 BUT I think is a good measuring stick for Ward to gauge where he is at and where he needs to be. Perbian has been in with a lot of the current up and comers. Hopefully Ward has a better fight after.
Hopefully. I don't think the big questionmark about Ward is his long layoff, but the shoulder surgery. It's a pretty big deal, and maybe something Ward worries much about himself, thus adding to his cautiosness.
I think a fight between Andre and Joe would have been intriguing. With regards to ranked opponents, Andre's been very inactive as of late, so it's understandable that he'll be fighting a lesser opponent at this stage. Joe's opponents being ranked, doesn't say a lot. Because the division was weak for the majority of his reign, and the WBO wasn't respected. And after the Darrin Morris incident, they actually became a laughing stock. Periban (if that's who he's fighting) is probably no worse than some of the mandatories who Joe fought. :good
