I'm not one of those people, but I give the edge to Calzaghe in the stamina & workrate departments - tools to win rounds against Ward. When was the last time you watched rounds 10-11-12 from the Bika fight?
I've become a fan of Ward, I like his style and in many ways he's technically far superior to Calzaghe but I don't think I've seen Ward show the necessary tools to beat Calzaghe. Ward is often compared to Hopkins who gave Calzaghe a close fight when past prime. But Ward is not Hopkins, he does not have the right hand which Calzaghe has always been susceptible to. Ward has a great left hand but his right is nothing special. Ward also likes to fight at a certain pace, we've never seen him set the kind of pace Calzaghe can set or even prime Hopkins could set. He usually throws well below the super middleweight average. Ward is a great all round boxer but I think he may get outworked in a close fight. Calzaghe by decision.
Man, I would love to have seen this fight materialize. Ward by close but clear UD, depending on the venue.
joe would never fight andre ward till ward was 43 and joe was still postprime. and then he might just scrape a split win.
Too many on here focus on old Calzaghe when he was beating Hopkins and Jones and not prime Calzaghe. I would still pick old Calzaghe to clearly beat Ward and younger Calzaghe to stop Ward. Calzaghe was too fast, too powerful, better chin, busier. Easy Calzaghe win similar to how he beat Lacy
I think alot of opinion is given due to the fact that Calzaghe is the greatest SMW ever and not American, so many American fans seem to want to exagerate about Ward because Calzaghe is not American, but I expect if Calzaghe was American more would pick him to beat Ward. Cant understand how anyone could pick Ward, but many didnt see Calzaghe before he beat Lacy which was past best Calzaghe and dont know how good some of the names on his resume are compared to todays ratings.
