What a great fight that would have been. I think Calzaghes work rate would have caused Ward problems but who am I to doubt, like we saw last weekend Ward seems to find a way.
calzaghe wins ud. speed and work rate would betoo much for ward, and even if ward did turn it into a dirty fight calzaghe can adapt
What did speed and work rate do for Clevery against Kovalev? You need more than speed & work rate at elite level. Calzaghe had sloppy skills which would be exposed by Ward worse than they were exposed by Hopkins. Flat footed come forwarder's like Lacy were perfect for Joe. Well rounded boxers like Kessler and Reid gave him a boxing lesson. The former succumbing to an injury and the latter being robbed of a decision. Kessler didn't win a minute of any round against Ward and Reid wouldn't have either.
exposed by hopkins?? i think you'll find what hopkins and ward do is spoil, they dont come to fight. there masters at doing it but thats not boxing in my eyes.
I don't even think the fight would be competitive. Ward has always ducked technically gifted fighters. If he ducked Groves and DeGale, what makes you think he would have fought Calzaghe? Ward would have ducked him, because he only fights robotic sluggers. When he was pressured into a fight with a fighter who has some technical savvy (Kovalev), he got his аss kicked.
I totally agree, but i'd suggest their records speak volumes about how effective their technique is. I cannot stand Ward, but he'd box Joes head off.
This is a pick'em fight. Nobody has ever boxed Joe's head off, he's just as awkward as Ward when he wants to be.
I saw it when it happened, Calzaghe had chased Reid for years and Reid came out and said that he hadn't earned the fight. Then when Reid lost his title he was magically then interested in fighting Joe. It was a close fight, prime motivated Reid was quality operator and Calzaghe hadn't developed a lot of the traits that made him successful in the latter part of his career such as adaptability. Ward and Calzaghe's common opponents - Kessler and Bika. Both had similar levels of performance vs those two fighters. Competitive but clear victories.
