It's a 12 rounder as no one is getting KO'd. Both might get knocked down briefly but no KO. Calzaghe by a margin. Way too smart and able to execute a better game plan. Some of his fights against an absolute peak Kessler show a high level of concentration.
No he didn't. It was a competitive fight, I would have liked to have seen the rematch as I believe if Kessler had been more aggressive vs Wards headbuts and elbows that fight he would have had more success. There is definitely a gameplan where Kessler can win that fight.
You're thinking of a different fight. It wasn't competitive in the slightest. Kessler got absolutely battered .
50/50 fight for me. I see Ward probably landing the cleaner, more effective shots. I think his defensive brilliance coupled with his footwork and perpetual movement would probably cause Joe C's punch output to diminish. I can't see a way that Calzaghe throws 75+ punches per round against someone as technically gifted as Andre Ward. I favor Ward in a competitive decision.
Calzaghes iron chin against Wards pillows? joe isn't getting KD, also if we are talking prime for prime, the Joe that KD Eubank KO's Ward.
There is no d There is no debate anymore, this fantasy match up was solved for us by what a much lesser fighter in Kov did to Ward and even what a shot shop worn Bika did let alone the shoesalesman Boone. Calzaghe too fast, too unorthodox, too strong willed, too much stamina, to fast footed, too smart, too strong and a much better fighter. Ward has been exposed against a middle aged son of a fork lift driver, Kov is a good boxer but he isn't elite level, he is actually quite cumbersome at times and not too fast but Ward couldn't solve the puzzle as Kov used his strength to nullify Wards usual spoiling tactics. You have to remember that a blown up, hand injured Calzaghe completely shot beat a defensive master far superior to Ward in Hopkins, Hopkins best wins came post Joe proving he was peaking, Ward never stood a chance.
Yes well said, Kessler wasn't the same fighter as before due to his ring rust and what Joe did to him, but still this is what he said of Ward: “Ward is clever … But he’s not a fighter'' “Ward just doesn’t want to fight. Sometimes you should make rules against clinching. When I fought him in 2009 he clinched me 88 times. When we watched it on tape we actually counted. I tried to push him away but he’s clever at what he does. He’s a world champion of that. But I think he’s actually scared. He throws fast punches, light punches, and then holds you. It’s so boring. That’s why he has no fans. He’s not a big name and he likes to stay at home. “Showtime had to do everything to help him because there were no other Americans who could win the Super Six [the super-middleweight series which Ward won after defeating Froch in the final in December 2011]. The ref was not on my side. When I got the cut they took me to the doc and he said: ‘We’re going to stop the fight.’ The cut was clear of my eyes but they still stopped it. I had just started to attack him and I got him in the corner but they got scared and called in the doctor.”
One thing we do know now.. Ward ain't peerless anymore! Kovalev was bossing parts of that fight! Calzaghe at his best would gave been a stylistic nightmare for him too.. Amazing gas tank and workrate. Awkward southpaw flashy style too..
Calzaghe wins this showdown handily. There are not a lot of good strategies for beating Calzaghe. But if you don't have the power to get his respect (and Ward doesn't), there is no strategy. You will be out-sped and out-worked and lose rounds. The best match-up for Joe in recent decades is the one we never saw: (Prime) Roy.
