What needs attention is Ray would be coming in heavier then he ever would want to whilst Ward would be over the classic 175lbs limit. A less mobile Ray spells disaster against a very, very psychical, skilled and dirty LHW. It would be an ugly, maulers fight.
As great as that SRR was - Ward was a much bigger fighter, skilled, strong and not above reducing it to an ugly spectacle to get the W. Asking Robbi to go to 168 lbs is the same as asking Ward to come down to 160 lbs - the fight isn't going to tell you anything really about their H2H p4p credentials.
Ward would be much bigger, a mauler who isn't going to let SRR really show off his boxing game, and oh, yeah, I hope SRR's balls are made of steel because they're going to be worked over like a heavy bag. Also not sure how good Robinson's defence against a single leg takedown is. Ward wins or loses by DQ if there's a ref in there without tinted glasses.
Tinted glasses mean nothing. Just another hypothetical matchup with a fighter above his best weight. Pretty pointless.
Well this forum is becoming more dead recently anyway with 'pointless' threads and repeated matchups which people have already covered, so I thought I'd make a size vs skill matchup that hasn't been done before and I thought some might say Robinson, although I don't believe he would win, I wanted to see people's reasons
Robinson only weighed 157 and some change when he fought Maxim; it seems to me that he felt that his advantage in speed and skill would best be served by coming in light, rather than by bulking up and trying to out strength Maxim. I don't think that he would come in any heavier against Ward and for the same reason. A wrestling, mauling fight is Ward's game so Robinson would prepare himself to fight his fight, not gain weight to fight Ward's fight. After that it comes down to how you think that Ward compares to Maxim.
After some shaky rounds learning Ward's style, Ray drops Ward harder than either Boone or Kovalev ever did. And, the second time he catches Ward, he keeps him down. I see no convincing evidence that Ward is any better or stronger than Maxim. And, Ray was winning that fight before the heat exhaustion felled him.
