just read that Ward has said that Kovalev doesn't have a good inside game? Let's get one thing clear I'm not a so called hater and I've already given credit for Ward turning round a fight where many would have given up,that said I can't say I'm a fan of how he goes about winning his fights and I'd like to know what the forum thinks an "inside game" really is? I think it's true that not many modern boxers of today possess a decent inside game but if I was pushed to name a current boxer I would pick the much hated but talented Canelo Alverez as he does and is prepared to stay in there and box with uppercuts, feints and body shots in the manner of the great Duran who is usually named as the bench mark for having a great inside game in an era when refs knew about it being a part of the game and let both guys manoeuvre and play out a chess match in Durans case. Right onto Andre Ward and how he fights in the big matches,as soon as he felt Kovalevs power in round two the first thing he did in round three after getting up off his stool is charge at SK like a Billy goat and went into his famed "stink up the fight"mode,it didn't come as a surprise and I and many on here predicted it would happen,I understand why he does it because it upsets the rhythm of his opponent and Kovalev was into a rhythm and from then on he struggled,my question is this though,is wrestling and jab n charge considered a "good inside game"?
Shawn Porter is a modern fighter with a good inside game. Ward has a good one, but it honestly wasn't displayed in this fight. Vs Froch is a great example of him being a great infighter, but Froch is kind of limited in his boxing ability if we're being completely honest. Good fighter, but limited.
Porter has a **** inside game he smothers his own work and fights dumb. Just because he's aggressive and likes to fight on the inside doesn't mean he's a good inside fighter. Porter fights the way he does because hes limited.
Kovalev used holding and headlocks to shut Wards inside game out reducing his own work in the process . He lost rounds because of it.
If he smothered his own work as much as people make it out that he does he wouldn't be able to hurt his opponents the way he does.
Who has he stopped? He gets inside and just throws anything he can often ugly, slappy shots just trying to land with anything and hope volume carries the day. Porter is massive at 140 but he doesn't really hurt guys. He outworks them but other than Paulie he hasn't stopped anyone of note.
He may not be stopping every single person he comes across, but at the very least he hurts them li- WTF WAIT A MINUTE THAT IS THE ARGUMENT WE'RE USING NOW?! What about Andre Ward? Who has he stopped?!
You really dont understand inside fighting. If you think Porter is effective at it. He basically rushes in and throws anything he can to land. Look at Duran - head movement, body shots, effective combinations up and down and only holding when absolutely normally to grab hold and adjust position. Ward tends to be hook and hold although he has the ugly street smarts to give him some effective if underhand variety. Porter just wails - he throws anything he can at one point Vs Broner his head was at waist height and he was trying to throw over hand rights. Porter smothers his own work, doesn't land clean or put full power into his shots a lot of the time when in close.
It isn't ideal, but he is effective at what he does and off the top of my head I can't think of many active fighters that fight on the inside right now. I'm not saying that he's one of the best ever so using a Roberto Duran comparison doesn't do anything to my point. I'm just saying that he's most known for that and is the most successful at it currently.
It wasn't enough to impress you, but it was enough to mitigate Kovalev' power and eventually win the fight. If you don't understand what he's doing, it's not his problem, it's yours. Give Boxing training a shot and maybe you will realize that it's not as easy to apply what he did as it looks.
He is doing what Hopkins did a lot of clinching and wrestling in the pocket , yes he is able to free up a hand and quickly land a punch off the clinch. But he stinks up the fight for us fans that can appreciate in fighting from guys like JCC sr and James Toney .
He will fight the way he needs to win. That's how it goes and that's how it's supposed to go. Fans can either appreciate or be gullible(typical) and complain. He sure as hell won't open up and risk getting knocked out only to be called a "glass jawed loser" by those same idiotic pathetic "fans". Real fans of the sport will always appreciate seeing a fighter come back from being seriously hurt and finding a way to win. I believe Amir Khan is a primal example of opening up to entertain fans. What has he gotten in return?, being called a glass jawed joke by those same losers that call themselves fans. Miguel Cotto and Paul Williams both got similar treatments and the examples are endless.
lennox lewis had no inside game, golota destroyed him on the inside and he quit. i don't know who is better on the inside golota or ward
