Golota, simply because he had better skills and was faster. Maskaev also a slow starter so he won't KO Golota like Lewis or Brewster
It could got either way. A lot hinges on how well Maskaev rattles Golota with the right. Oleg should be a slight favorite. He was more consistent and did knock Rahman out twice, who was every bit as good as Golota. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Golota should win this. He is faster, more powerful, more durable, and a better boxer than Makaev. I am continually puzzled by the love Oleg gets on this site. He was not a very good fighter. With the exception of his wins over Rahman, not sure he even has a single meaningful win. And, in spite of his muscular physique and thick neck, he could not take a punch. I was ringside when Oliver McCall walked right through him in one round. It was a total mismatch. At least Golota showed flashes of elite level skill in his fights with Bowe. That Golota would have wiped out any version of Maskaev.
Golota seemed like a level above Maskaev in the skills department but Maskaev's heart, compared to Golota's, gives him a chance here...I guess. I'm picking Golota at his best. Never a fan of Oleg.
Admittedly, Golota's resume is pretty thin, as well. But, on his best night (Bowe 1), he looked pretty talented. Maskaev never showed me any substantial talent whatsoever. Maskaev is one of the very few titlists in history that I would actually favor Wilder over.
Yeah, I posted this because I figured opinions would be pretty divided. I'd slightly favor Golota. I think he was overall the better fighter. Maskaev has the big right hand, which if he landed it, either very early or very late, could take Andrew apart. Most likely though, Golota would bust him up and probably stop Oleg late.
Golota by comfortable decision He was way more talented. He'd counter the rather crude Oleg all night.
Golota sandwiched the Bowe fights in between almost getting knocked out and DQ'd against Pouha and getting humiliated by Lewis. I tend to think Bowe was just awful by the time Golota fought him, and Bowe still won each legitimately. The older version of Golota who fought Byrd and Ruiz was probably better since he could actually stick to a gameplan. Maskaev was good enough to knock prepared versions of Rahman out twice and almost beat Tua. I don't think Golota would fare as well against those two. And Golota didn't typically score early knockouts, which was what Maskaev was most vulnerable to. It just seems like Maskaev would find a way to win even if Golota had the talent. Golota had more natural talent than Maskaev. But if there was anything at stake - like a win over a big name - Golota found a way to lose. I've got to go with Maskaev.
