I'll take Andrew, early CRAZY Golota that rumbled with the likes of Nicholsen, Pou'ha, Bowe (twice) Tyson and Grant was a wrecking machine, but also a head case. So I'll pick him by a mid round TKO but if Oleg survives Golota may have a melt down. Later Golota like the one who fought Byrd and Ruiz seemed to fight much more controlled I felt like he finally got his head on straight and fought smarter but he wasn't quite as good he'd lost a step but even this version I think can get a UD vs Oleg
Though he held a belt, I think of Maskaev as a journeyman, and Golota as a contender. And in such matchups, it is wise to favor the contender. Maskaev is to Rahman what Barkley was to Hearns. But he never really did that to anyone else of note.
He beat Sinan Samil Sam. He was more accomplished than anyone Golota beat. Derrick Jefferson was also taken pretty seriously going into the Maskaev fight. The Russian guy he beat in his debut was also a pretty serious fighter. That guy was undefeated with a Bronze medal and scored two knockdowns of Bowe in the ams. The fight is in YouTube.
Sam and Jefferson were journeymen, nothing more. All due respect, but if you can't remember the Russian guy's name, how noteworthy could he be?
I'm not going to go through Sam's resume, but he accomplished more than anyone Golota beat not counting a shot Witherspoon. You could argue that Golota deserved a win against Byrd or Ruiz, but that's a little different than actually getting it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Another vote for Oleg for the upset win. This is the kind of opponent he could get a win over. He keeps that power throughout the fight and he'll connect with that sneaky right late in the bout. Nobody ever had problems solving that Golata defense and I think he gets clipped late and goes. Probably like the Grant fight, come to think of it. Andrew looks great early and jumps out ahead. Everything going his way. But this opponent hangs tough. And doesn't give up & lands a big shot with Golata standing in front of him w/ a shot he never even see's. There were far more of these fights that should have happened that we ever got to see. Just too big of a step back for the loser if no title was involved, or it had to be a title eliminator type agreement.
Golota seems to get more passes for losing big fights than anyone on the Classic forum. I don't see where Golota was more talented than Maskaev. Golota blew chance after chance through out his career. Maskaev over came some terrible management to win a belt. Jeez his manager thru him in with Oliver McCall in Maskaev's 10th or 11th fight. Then he goes on a 4 fight win streak, then gets thrown in with a young David Tua, who he almost out boxes before getting caught late. Later he is put in with Rahman and he upsets the apple cart by KOing loud mouth. A few good wins then he incurrs a brutal KO by Johnson. Next fight they feed him to a hot Lance Whitaker, getting KOed in 2. At this time Oleg really looks finished. Three fights later he is KOed again, this time by T-Rex. Maskaev slowly works his way back up with a 12 fight winning streak over various journey man to land another fight with Rahman, who now has Vitali's old belt. Loudmouth Rahman apparently had not learmed much over the years, running his mouth and acting the fool before the fight. Oleg once again slowly beat Rahman's azz, stopping him in 12. This time just about all the sand has run out of the hour glass for Oleg. He gets a "give me" defense in Moscow, then loses the title to Sam Peter. Goes 5-1 in his last fights, then retires. Oleg Maskaev had at least as good of skills a Golata, but a lot more heart. I take Oleg over Andrew by late stoppage.
I can't argue with anyone who picks Maskaev. Golota is a hard guy to defend. This would have been a good fight. Golota is hard to assess, because technically he has two losses to Bowe....despite beating the hell out of Rid**** and ruining his career. He also got the draw with Byrd, which many people thought he won. I thought Ruiz edged him, but I can't argue with anyone who thinks Andrew won that one. The bottom line is that both of these guys were highly erratic and unreliable.
Maskaev is big enough to not let Andrzej bully him (and has equally underrated boxing skill) but you have to figure something is landing sooner or later and he can't take Golota's best shots.
Golota wouldn't blow this one. Oleg, plain and simple, had NOOOOO chin. And was slow as a turtle. He wouldn't withstand the punishment Bowe took. Golota TKO 6.
